In FamilySearch Family Tree there is a locality for Piana degli Albanesi, Palermo, Sicily, Italy. However, prior to 1941, Piana was called Piana dei Greci. See this paragraph from Wikipedia:
King John II of Spain and Sicily allowed the original refugees to occupy the present place and to preserve their Orthodox Christian rite.[7] These Albanian refugees were at the time referred to by the surrounding population as "Greeks" on account of their Orthodox faith and the settlement became known as Piana dei Greci.[8][9] For example, in 1673, the local priest Domenico Mamola in a note written in Greek refers to the settlement as Piana dei Greci.[7] In 1941 during Mussolini's invasion of Greece, the name was changed to Piana degli Albanesi so as to gain the locals support for the fascist regime's imperialist intentions toward Albania.[9][10] The name Piana degli Albanesi or Plain of the Albanians is a literal translation of the local Arbëreshë name: Hora e Arbëreshëvet.[9]
You can follow the links to their sources regarding this name change. In addition, my family left Piana dei Greci in 1904 and my grandmother's passport and the residence and birth location listed on the ship's passenger lists all name it Piana dei Greci.
Most particularly, the Civil Registration that is digitized and available on FamilySearch through the catalog uses the name Piana dei Greci in the actual records: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-L97B-8H5C?i=8&cc=2051639&cat=470935
I love that the local churches have been added into the system, but shouldn't there also be an option for the correct legal name for the location, prior 1941?
As I've been working on this, I have found that most of my references to Piana dei Greci have changed to link to the standard of Palermo, Palermo, Sicily, Italy, which is incorrect. It used to be that I could type in Piana dei Greci as the visible location, but select Piana degli Albanesi as the standardized location, but I cannot do so now. So if all of my family now shows a standard of Palermo instead of Piana dei Greci or even Piana degli Albanesi, the search engines are not going to be as good at finding the correct records or the correct people.
