Letters/Postcard for Translation
I found copies of three letters and a postcard in my Grandmothers files. I have had these copies for quite a few years, but have not asked for them to be translated. Not sure they can be. What would you recommend my request be - i.e. upload all of them in this discussion, or do separate requests for each?
My grandparents came to the U.S. from Süderhackstedt, Schleswig-Flensburg, Schleswig-Holstein and Dägeling, Steinburg, Schleswig, Schleswig-Holstein.
Thank you,
Joan

Dear parents!
How are you, hopefully well? Didn't you get the picture? You don't write back at all. We have had quite a winter here and a lot of snow; it is still snowing today. We have a bit of a cold, but otherwise we are fine. Rudolf Böthern is with us again when the farm work begins he wants to help Heinrich Hobble(?) Greetings from all of us.

Thanks Ulrich
These translations mean a lot and help me gain more insight into the lives of my grandparents and relatives,
Joan

Hello @JoanCuster
I would propose to upload one by one. Maybe only one first to see how difficult the handwriting is.

Ok - thank you for the recommendation.
I will upload the 1st one now.
Attached are 4 images from one letter to see if it can be translated (I am not sure the pages are in order)
If this can be translated, I will upload the others later. My grandparents names were Claus (Klaus) Drewes and Catherina (Katerina) Rathje. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Feb. 9, 1963.
Thanks for helping,
Joan

Dear children
We received your letters and saw from them that you are still doing quite well. This is always a great joy for us, because you are mistaken, dear daughter, in thinking that we have already forgotten you, although you have many brothers and sisters and it would therefore be possible, but here with us you are always missed, because there are not many days in the week when we do not speak about you. Mother talked with you personally during the night and was glad that you were here again, but when she woke up it was not true. Dear children, here it is now improved much already because we have now stable money again and are getting along quite well. I earn 26 to 28 marks a week because now everything _____? and all work done is charged by the minute. You have to get on with it if you want to earn something but that doesn't matter because your father is still fit and strong and can still earn a living. With mother it is still the same, she needs now doctor Möller. He thinks that she will be completely healthy again. The other siblings are all still healthy as far as we know. Wiebke had a daughter during this time and Berta also became a mother 4 weeks ago. Heinrich in Heide has stopped working at the railroad and has become a school servant in Heide since he has 108 marks a month, free housing and firing. And now something about our household: the chickens have stopped from laying eggs because the winter has come, frost temperature has started so that the windows are a little painted. Our potato harvest has turned out quite well so we have about 40 hundredweights of potatoes and then our stubborn bristle carrier (pig) which probably weighs its 4 hundredweights. And we have also 4 rabbits in the stable. They are still small but Johannes will feed up one until Christmas. So we can defy the winter if we remain healthy. Olga serves with Heinrich Bamm, she wants always to be not far from home, but she also has a good place there, it is nice and she likes to be there. I can't really inspire her to write because she never knows what to write. More next time. With warm greetings from home.
Father, mother, and brothers and sisters
NB: I'll be off for a week. So no more translations for now 😉

Thanks you.
This means a lot, as I believe this is my grandmother's family. As far as I know, none of her siblings came to the U.S. whereas my grandfather's all did come.
Remind me when you get back and I can submit some more.

Dear children, finally I am able to write; my head is often not working well, it is so strange that I sometimes do not know what I'm doing and Johannes does not show up at all, because he has been here last for Pentecost and Ludwig is in the hospital and Grige with pneumonia and with the work it is very bad here. How that will be in the winter we do not know. Monks Wismann is also leaving now, the ship leaves tomorrow. But otherwise things are going well here. The crops are standing quite well, but the harvest is late. Everything is still late. Milk costs 15 f here, eggs 12 f, and sugar is so expensive that it now costs 40 f/pound. Soon it will cost 60. Friday was the children's festival here. I recently spoke to Tine's mother, who wanted to come here, but hasn't been here yet. Wilhelm Bannick has also married. Tine Pikes also visited us here. She has now returned to Hamburg and is doing well. I should also greet from her. Herewith I want to close. Greetings from all of us Mother Helene and Ludwig.
Greetings to Johan and his wife and children, he can also write to me.

Thank you Ulrich,
Many new names for me to search. I am not sure if this is from my grandfather's mother or my grandmother's mother. More to research.
The next one I have is a short letter.
I believe it was sent prior to my grandparents 50th wedding anniversay.
I so appreciate you helping me with this.

Dear friends,
We send greetings for your Golden Anniversary! We had hoped to bring them personally; the weather will not allow it. It is a bit too far to risk it. We hope that it will be a beautiful celebration and that you will be able to experience the day still more times. Next year it will be our turn too. Time passes quickly and we go along without realizing it.
We had hoped that you would come again in the summer. Nothing came of it, so next summer.
We are otherwise well, have our work, so no boredom.
So congratulations and greetings from
Rudolf and Anna Böthern
