You're welcome, Carol. I can find no evidence in Thode, Wörterbuchnetz, and lists of old German professions that "Gartensmeier" is an occupation. So to be on the safe side you should search for both Sünkel and Gartensmeier.

Thank you, I would never have caught this! Another Hofname!? I thought "Gartensmeier" was J.F.Conrad's occupation "a garden farmer". So his birth name was "Gartensmeier" and his Hofname is "Sünkel"?
