Cass Surname Distribution by County
One of the tools I love for family history is the surname distribution map. It is just one of many tools we have available which quickly illustrates a lot of information. I've included two maps based on where people named Cass lived in England at the time of the 1881 census. One is arranged by county and the other by poor law union. A poor law union encompassed about twelve parishes. George Redmonds has stated that this information is indicative of where surnames were concentrated two and three hundred years earlier.

this is great, you will not believe this, but I worked on a map in the 1980's using old telephone directories. I'll post this to the site and also the facebook group. Now as then, Cass had a Yorkshire or northern origin, but spread out.

Yorkshire is where George Redmonds is from. Most of his examples are based on Yorkshire surnames. His book, Surnames In Genealogy: A New Approach is one of my favorite family history guides.

I'm sorry to say George Redmonds has passed away, in 2018. https://www.theguardian.com/books/2018/aug/21/george-redmonds-obituary

I hadn't heard so really appreciate the link to his obituary. It reminds me that we need to make sure the Family History Library has his recent books. I love the recordings of his talks at FGS and NGS conferences.
