Question Posted:
I am a newly appointed Temple and Family History Consultant. I am reading and watching the resources I can find on Family Search and am wondering what else should I do to become oriented to this assignment. What are the first five things I should do?

- In FamilySearch.org , sign in. Go to HELP and select the, Helper Resources for your calling. Learn how to use the WIKI. Have a 5th Sunday meeting on a new topic in FS. Know how to fix tree problems- duplicates, etc.

- Welcome to the best calling in the Church! I would talk to your ward family history leader if you have one or your Elder's quorum president if there is no leader designated. Ask for suggestions from them. Get their input and ideas. Let them know you are ready and willing and that you are looking for names of who to help.
- I would also reach out to your stake temple and family history consultant if you have one. They will be listed under Helper Resources.
- I would start praying about who in your ward the Lord would have you help. Then invite those individuals to meet with you that you feel prompted to help. This is your personal ministry and the Lord can direct you who you can invite and what those individuals need. Don't forget the new converts, the 11 year olds that will be turning 12 in the coming year, and the less active or those that need a spiritual boost.
- When you do help people, take the time to prepare beforehand, preferably using the Consultant Planner.

- I agree it is the best calling ever! I also agree prayer is the key to get the inspiration you need about who to help and how to help them. Don't wait around for people to call you - be proactive and set up your own appointments.

- I'm attaching a document I created for new consultants. You can get help for #3 and #4 from your stake consultant. Also here is my website with the docs I most frequently use in my calling: ilovefh.weebly.com.

- I know how you feel as my wife and I were called as TFH Leaders last Spring without a clue or any help as to what to do. Since then we have been able to help our Ward Council prepare a TFH Plan, which I will include in this message, in the event it might help you prepare yours, if you haven't already accomplished that important task. If you want the original file to use as a template I'd be happy to send it, or if you need any further help you can email me at (rscott@epgllc.co) ...notice it's not .com. We had a 5th Sunday with the Youth and Adults to introduce the plan to the Ward earlier last month and each auxiliary is really "stepping up to the plate" and preparing their own agenda based on the PLAN. Before the introduction of the plan we handed out a survey in RS and EQ to gauge the interest an need then used the survey to prepare our presentation. Today we are having a 5th Sunday with a special table event that each person interested in learning more or having specific questions answered. Luckily, our EQ 1st Counselor actually works for Family Search so that's been a real help and our Stake TFH Leaders are amazing. I also have a PowerPoint presentation that I made to the Bishopric and Ward Council and the 5th Sunday that you are welcome to. Cudo's on your positive attitude and keep up the good work. If you want more detailed information please let me know, I'll help you all I can. Robert

- The five concepts that most helped me understand being a ward and stake consultant (and where I learned them):
- What's Discover Gather Connect? (see BYU FHL webinar How to Prepare for a Successful Discovery Experience w/ Demo-Kathryn Grant, 13 Mar 2019)
- What's the Consultant Planner, how do I use it, why do I use it? (see Using Helper Resources for Discover-Gather-Connect – Kathryn Grant, 22 Aug 2019)
- What's a Personalized FH Experience? (See the Kathryn Grant webinar of 13 Mar 2019)
- What the Wiki has to offer (try clicking on "Help Using the Wiki" in a small box at the top center of seemingly every Wiki page, and viewing the automated guided tours)
- Where else to get help and info? A few key sources are 1) in the Wiki see FamilySearch Family History Library classes and webinars, 2) on the FamilySearch Help Menu/Help Center/T&FH consultants/Lessons tab - Helping Others Get Started With Family History, a series of 48 videos (put the series title in the search box to get the full list), 3) in FamilySearch Helper Resources under Additional resources - Church policies and procedures for temple and family history work and FamilySearch, 4) The Family History Guide, https://www.thefhguide.com, a free FamilySearch approved comprehensive information and learning resource for family history.
