Land records are excellent, often an adult child will purchase a part of the Families Farm, and a transfer or “Quit Claim Deed” will be recorded providing much needed information. Looking for land records is a rewarding pastime! For Government Land Office/Bureau of Land Management records try this link:

Land Grant records for much of the land in held by other countries prior to the creation of the United States have interesting landmark identification. Start searching for land records if you have ancestors who came to the United States for free or less expensive land! Three sets of my ancestors came here for the land that they could not hope to own in their native country. You will find the deeds, information on the land, and interesting information! Remember the old “Land Rush” movies in black and white? Too Young? Well much of the land was recorded at Government Land Offices.. Check out what you can find about your ancestors where they lived, how they got their land, oh and check out the neighbors!! You would be amazed to find families of some spouses settling close by!

It's an excellent website. Just be aware that the search engine on glo records does not pick up spelling or indexed surname variations very well so sometimes, if you know your family was in a certain area it's best to look at the maps of area in that time period and you may recognize a family surname that way!

You are absolutely correct! I normally try the spelling I have then move on to last name only if I have an idea where. Then you have the issue that the person who wrote the "land document" spelled things the way they thought it should be spelled! BLM/GLO Records just adds more Spice to our search stew!!
