Help with death and second marriage
I want to make sure I am correctly understanding the death and marriage records below because they have some inconsistent information when compared to other records (and each other).
I believe the death record says that the butcher Mariano Cilio (son of Matte) died 30 December 1880, and was 48 years old. Do I have the age correct?
Also, it seems that it is saying his second wife is alive and she was Anna Magna Donna casa [??]. Who was Salvatore Folara- her 1st husband?
I know that Mariano's first wife was Giovanna Giuarte (died 1865) and his parents were Matteo Cilio and Ann Giacci and the record for his 2nd marriage confirms these facts. However, in the excerpt below from the marriage record the name of his 2nd wife seems to be similar to the death record, but yet not the same. Could I get a translation of the excerpt from the marriage record?
Thank you!!

Notice that both of these events happened out of town. In the case of the 1880 death, the death was in Chiaramonte Gulfi, and because he was a resident of Biscari, the officials in Chiaramonte mailed the officials in Biscari a death certificate for their records. The same with the 1872 marriage, it was in Vittoria, and the officials mailed a copy and the officials in Biscari transcribed it in their registers.
If you go to the 1872 marriages in Vittoria and the 1880 deaths in Chiaramonte, you could find the original records for both, which I would recommend!
To answer your questions about the death record:
- Death was 13 Dec 1880
- Age at death was 48, yes
- Anna Magna would be his mother, and she's alive, profession donna di casa = housewife
- Salvatrice Folara is the Mariano's wife
And about the marriage record:
- The groom Mariano Cilio is the widow of the late Giovanna Giurato, and is aged 55 years old
- Yes, the parents of the groom are the late Matteo and Anna Giacchi (not Magna)
- Bride is Maddalena Triglia, widow of the late Salvatore Giuffrida, age 29, shopkeeper, daughter of the late Natale and Francesca La Rosa
So there are some inconsistencies here! Marriage records are generally accurate and trustworthy because it was mandatory for the civil officials to inspect the birth certificates of the bride and groom, so mistakes are rare. On the other hand, for death records, they took the informant's word, without any verification, so errors happen, especially in a case such as this where the person dies away from his residence and from people who know him.
It could be that your Mariano Cilio remarried Salvatrice Folara after Maddalena Triglia's death, and that the mother's name and alive/dead status, and also his age was just totally botched by the informant on his 1880 death record. It could also be that this is a totally unrelated Mariano Cilio, but I would find that to be too extreme of a coincidence. In any case, I recommend searching for Maddalena's death in Biscari and Mariano's eventual remarriage, as that would clear things up a lot.

Thank you! You have confirmed my thoughts regarding the inconsistencies, but that I also think there are enough consistent facts that I have the correct people.
Knowing no Italian, I did not pick up on the fact that these events happened out of town, so that is very helpful information! I will definitely search for the original records in addition to a death for Maddalena and perhaps another remarriage for Mariano!
Once again, thank you!
