Answered:Looking for information of my great-grandparents from Montella (Avellino)

The information I have:
My great-grandparents' names were: Francesco and Filomena Varretta.
They had 2 or more children: Giovannina (my grandmother) and Luigi. Luigi went to Corsica and called himself Louis there.
The family came from Montella (Avellino). My grandmother (Giovannina) and her brother (Luigi) were born there but I'm not sure about their parents.
My grandmother was born on 1933 in Montella and died 2017 in Berne (Switzerland).
I would like to find out my great-grandmother's (Filomena) unmarried name so I can search further from there. Information about Francesco's parents would also be very welcome.

My recommendation would be to start searching both marriages and marriage publications back from 1933 (or the birth year of the oldest sibling) back until you find it. Alternatively, if either of your great-grandparents died in Montella prior to 1945, you should be able to find their death record and get their information that way.

UPDATE: I took a look at the Montella records for you and there is only 1 person with the surname Varretta in the entire time period 1916-1945, and it turns out that person is named Francesco Varretta. He marries a woman by the name of Filomena Giannantonio, but the problem is the marriage is in 1940, after the birth of your grandmother. Nonetheless, because he is the only Varretta present at all in the Montella records, I still think it's worth investigating further.

Do you really not have your grandmother's birth certificate, marriage certificate, or anything at all that would give her mother's full name? Your grandmother was born in 1933 so I imagine you yourself are quite young. I recommend asking your older family members if they know anything about this or if they know who in your family collected her personal documents after her death.

If you request the military service record from the Archivio di Stato di Avellino (small fee applies), you would be able to get his parents' full names and could therefore confirm whether or not what I found above is relevant.

I've already asked my dad, aunt, cousins for more information but they don't know.
However, I once heard it was a complicated relationship. The two families came from different social classes. Maybe that explains the late marriage?

What makes me a little puzzled is that in the register you mentioned
the name is Francesco Varretti and not Varretta.

Ok I compared the marriage and death record. The parents names and location of birth seem to match.
So it sounds plausible, despite of the Varretta / Varretti variation.

With this additional information from your family that your great-grandparents married after the birth of their children, these records are certainly correct. I'm very glad your aunt was able to confirm this for you!
I went through 30 years of records in Montella, and the only person with the surname Varretta was him, and if you look at the list of military records on the Archivio di Stato di Avellino website, you will see there are less than 5 Varretta alive in the entire province. Obviously, the family was not from Avellino province, and indeed, your great-grandfather appears to be from San Giovanni Incarico, Frosinone. Therefore, it would be an incredible coincidence for there to be two Francesco Varretta and Filomena couples present in Montella, and so the couple found above is certainly correct!
I still encourage you to contact the Archivio di Stato di Avellino to request your grand-uncle's military record as it would be good to confirm his parents' names and also learn details about his Italian military service.
If you want to continue the research:
- In San Giovanni Incarico - Very bad news, the only records online or available to the public at all are 1809-1865, so for any research after 1866, you must work with the comune directly requesting certificates. Alternatively, you can work with the local parish church, but this is even more difficult. That said, the military service records do exist at the Archivio di Stato di Frosinone (see index: http://www.archiviodistatofrosinone.beniculturali.it/index.php?it/216/anni-ruoli-matricolari), though I can't seem to find your great-grandfather in there.
- In Guardiaregia - The records are online for 1809-1910, so a little bit too early to find your great-grandmother's birth.
