Does anyone know anything about George Cottle? L4SL-H81
He's my fourth great grandfather, and apparently others in my family have tried to find out who his parents were, with no luck. If anyone knows anything about how I can find more information on him that would be great. Thank you so much!

The christening event shown on his page has been indexed on the FreeREG website - see https://www.freereg.org.uk/search_queries/60d4d2af791e3b3fba7352a7?locale=en. It appears the parents of the George christened at Radstock were George and Mary. From the page at https://www.freereg.org.uk/search_queries/60d4d38c791e3b3fba735e0f?locale=en it would appear (father) George Cottle married Mary Weekes on 3 July 1791 - also at Radstock, Somerset. However, I see you have discounted her as his mother, as you say she had died (in 1799), before George's 1804 christening. However, I do not see why you believe Mary died in 1799. There are other entries in the Radstock register that would seem to be a better match - including the 30 March 1830 burial of a Mary Cottle, aged 59 (see https://www.freereg.org.uk/search_queries/60d4d516791e3b3fc5644610?locale=en).
Declan - If I have time I will take a further look at George Cottle's records. He did not marry Mary Ann Granger until 1840 (I have added a note & event details, from FreeREG) but Sarah Ann (born 1840) has a mother's maiden name of HALES recorded in the GRO index and son George's (born 1843) mother's maiden name is shown as RICHARDS*. Their places of birth (from census records) match the districts where their births were registered, however. Also, George (senior's) birthplace is shown as Bath in the census, but he appears to have been baptised at Radstock - although this is only about 8 miles from Bath. (* Mary Ann's father is shown as Edward GRANGER in the FreeREG record, not RICHARDS, so she does not seem to have been a widow. Both George and Mary Ann are shown as being of Widcombe parish, about a mile from Bath.)
Further update - I just found the 14 October 1839 marriage between George Cottle and Mary Ann HALE at Trevethin, Monmouthshire. As this matches Sarah Ann's 1840 birth record and birthplaces shown in the census records, I think you might need to question whether it could have deen this George Cottle who married Mary Ann GRANGER - particularly as there were at least four George Cottle individuals baptised in Somerset between 1802 and 1810.

I have found relationships in this family (especially the marriages of George Cottle) to be so intriguing that I have carried on in researching the family - with particular reference to FreeREG records (quite good coverage for Somerset, but not so for Monmouthshire). I have also looked at the census sources attached to George (inconsistent with regards to his children's birthplaces) and the GRO indexes, too.
I have added notes (in his Collaboration section) on my findings. Assuming the census records, etc., relate to the same George Cottle, it is clear he married at least twice. The baptisms of Matilda, Henry and James all show a mother "Elizabeth", but give an occupation of "plasterer" rather than "painter". I have been unable to find the baptism of Caroline and remain totally confused as to whether he married Mary Ann Hale(s) in Monmouthshire or Mary Ann Granger in Somerset.
With regards to his death, if you accept it was "your" George Cottle who was at Horfield, Gloucestershire in the 1861 census, he almost certainly is the person registered (in the GRO index) with a 1865 death at Clifton, Gloucestershire (which included Horfield at that period) aged 60, i.e. born around 1805. (His widow Mary Ann is found in the 1871 census living in the same household as daughter Sarah Ann.)
I hope this detail is of some help, but some of it leads to more questions than answers, I feel! Please visit the FreeREG website and that of the General Register Office (GRO) at https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/menu.asp - although you will have to sign-up to view the birth & death indexes - whilst you need to go to FreeBMD for the post-1837 marriage index.

I'm afraid I might have become a little too enthusiastic in trying to solve the confusing situation relating to your George Cottle. I will send you a message via the Family Tree messaging service and try to work with you to get George's identity / vitals sorted to your satisfaction.
Meanwhile, please do not panic about any changes I have made: anything can be amended / put back to how it was - especially if you do not agree with my conclusions regarding George's relationships (parents & wives), etc.

Thanks so much, Paul, for all the work you've done to put together a possible story for George. I am very grateful for all your efforts. I tried many times to put his family together but I had no idea where to look for sources. I'm happy with the information that you have found on him. I hope to be able to collaborate with you more on this topic, but I am currently serving as a missionary so I don't have a lot of access to any of the record sites you have mentioned. I will be home in about 5 months, but in the meantime I can get you into contact with my father and you can discuss your findings with him. Thanks again for all you've done.
