The “forgotten” Census of 1885.
A special 1885 Federal Census was taken in the states of Florida, Nebraska, Colorado, and in the territories of New Mexico and Dakota.

Thank you. I wasn't aware of this "forgotten" 1885 census. Very interesting.

Yes it’s great for those who are researching those areas also, maybe some folks also forget that some states did their own census 5 years after each fed census.

Great info, thanks for sharing.

One of my favorite parts of genealogy is finding new resources (especially free 😊) I wish we had a group or a board dedicated to sharing these kinds of things. I share stuff all the time and I know a lot of it gets lost in the shuffle and that’s too bad because I know the things I share would be of great use to certain people researching certain things. Just a general “resource sharing group” ... maybe someone who’s good at being organized could help to create categories or whatever. I can see it in my head but haven’t a clue as to how to make it happen lol. What do you guys think?

Have you considered creating a group for this? You can submit a group request application. The link for new group requests is found in the How to Use FamilySearch Community.
Another option would be to add these to the FamilySearch Wiki.

I agree, the wiki is the best place to house those kinds of things for long-term, but a group would be nice. I've sometimes wondered if the FamilySearch Tips & Tricks group should be a more general Family History Tips & Tricks group? Or if we need both? @Carol Lou Hill what do you think?

Lol @[Janell Vasquez] 🤣when I first joined the community, I thought that’s what the tips and tricks group was for lol but then someone told me it was more for just tips etc about FS itself .... speaking of which... there’s an awesome little guide book in FS solutions gallery ... it’s called the family history guide and it’s loaded with info! My new fav thing

Did the resource group ever get started? Sounds just excellent to me.

We have a group called FamilySearch Tips & Tricks that we have talked about changing to Family History Tips & Tricks. The admin of that group is considering it, though she may want to keep it at just FamilySearch Tips & Tricks. If she decides we still need that as a FamilySearch specific one, then we'd be happy to see someone create a new group that is more general!

Update - the FamilySearch Tips & Tricks group changed the name to Family History Tips & Tricks for a little bit, but then decided to change it back to make it specific to FamilySearch again.
So if someone wanted to create a group that's more general to all types of family history tips & resources, you would be welcome to! Perhaps a couple of you could even do it as a collaboration. If no one wanted to admin the group though, you could probably also use the general Family History Research group for these kinds of things. I think they would be very happy to have these types of posts there too.
The Wiki is a great repository for these things long term so they don't get lost later. (edit-haha, I just read back and realized we already said this earlier in the thread....)

Ok I’ll try this. What do I need to do to get the group started?

Yay!!! You think of a name for the group and you fill out the form. I'll watch for your submission! https://docs.google.com/document/d/14TTdoA04SP38yMfh4tFJkZGFzloBtUqsfl98um2-d1I/edit

x24mom, I love your enthusiasm! FamilySearch is a wonderful place for volunteers to work together to help each other with our family history research. I am sure that many people have already benefited from the information that you have shared. I feel confident that you will continue to be a huge benefit to this Community.

personally I dont think it matters which name you use
I feel people will more often than not ASSUME it just meant tips and tricks for family research in general.
That was my own assumption (mis-interpretation).
and if you create another group for more general tips and tricks - I think you will just create confusion between the two groups.
I would be happy to admin a tips and tricks group.
BUT like I said - I get the feeling having two "tips and tricks" groups - will just create confusion.
People just see "Tips and Tricks' and thats all they focus on
the "FamilySearch" just flys by and no one really catches the significance.

Perhaps having two will actually help so that people will stop when they see the two Tips & Tricks and realize, oh, FamilySearch specific ones go here, and general ones go here. In any case, all we can do is try it and see what happens. Good for you @X24mom X24mom, thanks for begin willing to jump on this!
