Physician Training
What would be the process to becoming a physician in the early 1840s in France? My ancestor was a tailor as noted on his marriage record in Wissembourg in 1833 & in his children’s birth records in Montbéliard in 1838 & 1840 and Wissembourg in 1843. However, he was listed as a physician in Pennsylvania starting with records in 1850 and up until his death in 1885. It does seem odd that they traveled back up north for the birth of their 3rd child before they emigrated sometime before 1846 when their next child, my gr gr grandmother, was born in Pennsylvania. I have not been able to find any immigration records for the family.

The second link is a book and the part about France is a few pages in but mentions this time period in particular.
Perhaps the travel was for medical training. However all indications are that medical training in France by this time was a lengthy process. He may only have listed himself as a physician once he had completed training.
I am not sure anyone in Pennsylvania would have questioned his qualifications, so I suppose it is possible the family emigrated before his training was complete.

Hello! Thank you for the links. I'm just getting back online & I'll look into them. This ancestor has been quite a puzzle! I wonder if he ever did complete his training in France. He is not listed in the US Deceased Physician File (AMA) (on FamilySearch) or Directory of Deceased American Physicians (on Ancestry). In his 1885 obit it mentioned "he had a strange prejudice against men of his profession & could not be induced to have one called to attend him." So that makes me wonder if he ever did complete his medical training.
