Marriage Document Assistance
Good Afternoon,
I'm hoping someone might be able to help me out with translating the marriage record for my 4 times Great Grandparents - Karel Kimla & Franciska Hron (3rd couple on this document). I believe his parents were Vaclav and Anna and hers were Pavel & Anna. Any informatin on their familes from this document would be very helpful. I'm hoping to track down additional documentation on their families. The family story is that she got into a dissagreement with her family over an estate and that's why they came to America. Here is the translation as far as I can tell. Some of those place names are really hard to read:
Married 17 June 1832
House: Sedlčany no. 256
Groom: Karel Kimla, age 23, Catholic, single, master potter from Sedlczany, subject of the estate of Chlumnik[?] son of the deceased Waclaw (Vaclav) Kimla, master potter from Sedlczany, and Anna Kalina from Sedlyczany, estate of Chlumnik[?]
Bride: Frantisska (Františka) Hron, age 21, Catholic, single, daughter of the deceased Pawel (Pavel) Hron, farmer in Soloyp no. 5, and Anna Waniss [Vaniš?] from Skruhrov[?] subject of estate of Chlumnik[?]

Thank you for your help, I greatly appreciate it. I'm pretty new at researching Czech records, this was helpful. Frantiska was from the nearby town of Solopysky. I'll need to see if I can find an old map to try and track down Skruhrov or something spelled similarly. From another document, it does lists her mother as Vanis, so you had that correct as well.
Karel did list himself as a potter on his ship record, so that also seems to match. It's interesting to know his father was a master potter as well. There was also a family story that he was a gardener at an estate, but I'm guessing that probably wasn't the case. Do you know of a good resource to track down estates in Bohemia? Maybe I can find the one they were assigned to and how far away it was.

You're welcome! Mapy.cz is a good source for old Czech maps (you can change it from the modern version to an old map in the top left corner). Mapire.eu also has good historical maps. Skurhow (now Skuhrov) was the closest place I could find that resembled Skruhrov, you can view it on a map here (only 9 km south of Sedlčany).
It's possible that Karel did both occupations--peasants who lived on estates still had to contribute some labor up until 1848. The word for gardener (zahradnik) was also used to describe a farmer with a small garden.
The estate for Sedlčany was Chlumec according to this book (page 261). If you scroll up a page, it says the estate was owned by Prince Ferdinand of Lobkowic. The symbols by the name Sedlčany mean that it was a town and had a parish church. There were 284 houses and 2009 residents in 1848 when the book was written.

This is wonderful information and is so helpful. I cannot thank you enough! I've used Mapy.cz, but never knew you could see historical maps as well. Thank you for the estate information, it helps paint the picture and I look forward to sharing this with my great-aunt, whose surname is Kimla :)
