City of Wellford's roots extend back to 1740, when settlers came from Pennsylvania. Wellford and the surrounding area was originally called Beech Springs Township. It was formed in 1840, and held that name until 1876, when the Danville-Richmond Railroad was cut through the community. The railroad director, C.P.A. Wellford gave his name to the community. Wellford was chartered as a town in 1881.
