Ah ok, it's the same in France.

The word "Cantonnier" is both specific and dates from the second half of the 18th century and is less and less used in the French language.

In the past, the roads were maintained by the peasants then it was organized at the level above the municipality: at the cantonal level.

So the workers who worked for the Canton were called the "cantonniers".
