I'm trying to help my friend find his biological father. I had him take a Y-DNA test with FamiyTree
We could do a zoom meeting and I could share my screen so you could see what the data shows, or whatever you would like to do.

I'm not sure when I'll be able to do a zoom session, but I'm more than happy to help out. For what you're doing, though, the Y will just be a part of the picture. It will help to confirm the right general lineage but not a specific person. (My Y-DNA is virtually identical to the Y of my 5th cousin, twice removed!) Autosomes are great for the first four to five generations. You would get hits not only his father (if he tested) but to other blood relations of various degrees of relationships -- cousins, etc. (A cousin of mine found his father's birth family that way.) I believe there's a sale on at FTDNA right now for autosomes at $59.
Add his results to the Cooley DNA Project and I'll take a look.

Thanks for being willing to help. We know his mother and her ancestors but we know nothing about who his father was. I don't understand much about DNA.
In the FamilyTree DNA results for his Y-DNA test it has folders for "Matches" (2 people listed), "Advanced Matches" (167 pages of people), "Y-STR Results", "Haplotree &SNPs", etc.
How do I access the "Cooley DNA Project" and what info do you want me to add? By the way, my friend's name is Leonard John Michaelis, born, 20 March, 1946 in Illinois.

Thomas NeVille Tippets, I agree MichaelHCooley with the autosomal DNA route but I would suggest an Ancestry DNA test as they have the largest database. They will not allow uploads so you must test there and then you can upload the results to all the other sites to match DNA. There are lots of videos and facebook groups now that will show you how to sort your matches into maternal and paternal sides and bring up your paternal family "candidates". In addition there are "search angels" facebook groups who help with adoptees but maybe they will help with unknown fathers also.
