Where to SEARCH for person missing since 1817, presumably in France!
My 3rd great grandfather presumably went to France for work, shortly after marrying, and with his spouse carrying their only child.
My 2nd great grandfather was born in Hallstead, Essex, England in 1817. At the time of his birth his mother lived on Rosemerry Lane (or Rose Mary). Prior to his birth his mother lived at Gosfield, near Halstead, and it was probably from there that he left the family.
After my 2nd great grandfather was born (1817), his mother is said to have visited Black Notley, Yorkshire with relatives. After her husband failed to return for a period of seven years, and could be legally presumed dead, she remarried.
Edmund was a gentleman's servant & soon after marriage he went supposedly to France with his employer. After corresponding for a while he vanished and was never heard from thereafter. Nothing has been found in the way of death or any other record after 1817; only records of his birth and marriage in England.
Any clues or advise regarding where to begin searching in France would be helpful. Thanks in advance!

As with any death on French territory, the death of a foreign national must be declared to the town hall: of the municipality in which the death occurred; or the municipality where the deceased was domiciled. The mayor then draws up the death certificate.
Unfortunately, I cannot find his death in France.
Have you tried to get information through the consular channel?
I do not know the organization of the Civil Status of British citizens abroad, but I assume that the Consulates must be informed at some time or another of the birth, marriage or death abroad !?

Yes, he has eluded us all for decades. British citizen consulates sounds like something to pursue.... It appears the biggest problem is that we do not know where in France, or even if he truly was in France.... Thanks again!

I do not think it is necessary to contact a British consular service in France, on the other hand, there must be a service in Great Britain which centralizes all the registers.
The major difficulty in your research is that you do not know where he resided at the end of his life ... (imagine he went to live, for example, in Australia !! ??) and therefore, unless that this service has a general patronymic index, you will not obtain any result.
I'm also looking for collaterals that have "vaporized" and it's annoying that I can't get results. I put myself in your shoes ;-)
