Convert an Image to Text Using Google Drive
Have you ever received, found, or scanned an image and wished you could edit the text in your word processor? Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software can do this but can be costly if you only use it occasionally. With a Google account, you can quickly convert images to text for free.
Follow these steps to convert your image file to text:
- Go to the Google Drive (https://drive.google.com) website and sign in. If you do not have an account, it is advisable to create one (no cost to do so).
- Click on the New button in the upper left of the screen.
- From the drop-down menu, click File Upload to upload the image files you wish to convert.
- After your selection, click Upload to add the images to your Google Drive.
- Once files are uploaded, right-click on the image file and select Open With, then Google Docs.
- A new tab opens with the image at the top of the page and the corresponding editable text at the bottom.
- Once you are sure about the conversion, you may delete the image, save the remaining text, and close the tab. You will see the Google Document with the converted text next to the image file.
- Once you finish the conversion, you can edit it in Google Drive, or you can download to your local PC and edit it in your editor.
Points to consider:
- The image must have text that can be converted to editable text.
- The quality of the text in the image will determine the accuracy of the conversion.
- This process will not work on the handwritten text.
- Images can be png, jpg, tiff or any common graphic format. You may also convert PDF files to text.
- If only a certain part of the section is to be converted to text, it is best to crop that part of the image and then convert it to text.
- Images converted to the text should be below 2 MB in size.
- For PDF files, only the first 10 pages are converted to text. PDF files will need to be grouped into 10-page files.
This is a quick and easy way to convert images to text for free.
