I have done some preliminary research on this John Justiss. it is possible that he is the father of John H Justiss 1804-1857 whose son, John Williford Justiss married Kittie Yancey. Note that John H named his oldest son, John Williford Justiss - possibly after his maternal family. Any information to confirm or deny this link will be much appreciated. I'll let this group know if I find any more information either way.

I have just barely started researching this John Justiss when he showed up marrying Mary Williford. Found it interesting as the Williford name showed up in my husband's lineage. At this point my research stops with William H Justiss, so this "hint" is a potential link for this line. Only documentation so far is the marriage record between John Justiss and Mary Williford. Please note I listed William H Justiss as John H in my earlier post. But William H Justiss is the father of John Williford Justiss who married Kittie Yancey. John W and Kittie Yancey are my husband's great-great grandparents. Am hoping that I can either prove or disprove the link to John and Mary in later research. It's on my to do list.

William H. Justiss and Sarah Sallie Edney Perkins are my GGGparents. They moved the family from Georgia to North East Texas in ~1850. John Williford Justiss and Rachel Catherine Yancey are my GGrandparents. My sister and several cousins are active family genealogists -- we would love to verify William H. Justiss's parentage, so the John Justiss, Mary Williford discussion is very intriguing.

Not much is known about his parent other than that his Father was also William Justiss and Mother was Mrs. William Justiss. After that the trail ends unless someone finds a Family Bible.

Justiss Cemetery is a medium sized public cemetery located in rural Southeastern Titus County. It was established by William Justiss around 1850. Probably at the death of his daughter, Mary J. Justiss, who had married A. Cobb, as she was buried (died) on 9-6-1854. The Titus County Historical Society had a monument erected for Benjamin Gooch, a Titus County Pioneer. The cemetery has a white section on the West side and an African-American section on the East side. It contains 4 acres of land. Burials continue at infrequent intervals. Reasonable maintenance is conducted on the white section but the weeds are allowed to grow rather long. No maintenance is conducted on the African-American section and some of the graves are becoming lost in the underbrush and trees. The white section is surrounded by a chain link fence but there is no fence around the other section.
There were 24 concrete blocks locating some unmarked graves, 9 native stones, and 5 combinations of native stone and concrete block marked others. There was one native stone cairn.
To reach the Justiss Cemetery from the Titus County court house, take Madison Street south for 0.3 mile to the intersection with Ferguson Road (US 271). Turn left onto Ferguson Road and continue Southeast (the road becomes Texas Highway 49). Proceed 7.6 miles on Highway 49. The cemetery lies on the right, perhaps 100 feet South of the highway on a hill. Coordinates: 33o06.769'N 094o51.005'W
