What can I better do as a ward family history consultant during covid

Hello, Good question. Here is the Family History Guide. It is great.
The Family History Guide
I've done zoom meetings with ward members. I've done telephone calls. With youth it may be a little different, but they are tech savvy. You can do it via their phone.
Or have a Zoom meeting: or meeting place of your choice:, where you can introduce FamilySearch to a class or group. You can offer an information class you could give, or ask someone else to give.
You can go online to your FamilySearch.org page. Click on the ? question mark just to the left of your name. Then in the dropdown box, click on the "Helper Resources". Great information there. You can then ask a member if they need help and can you see their information. There is a way to do that in the Helper Resources.

Do enjoy.

FYI
.
I am "Moving" this (General) 'Question' of yours, to the 'Group' being "All Temple & Family History Consultants", in this "Community.FamilySearch" Forum; so that, the members of that group can answer/assist you.

Thank you. Those are great suggestions. On the helper resources page do you have any experience on the "easy invitation " option?
When you are introducing someone to FamilySearch how do you approach it? I find it overwhelming. Where do you start?

Yes indeed. I find it confusing also. It is new to me.
I'm going to take a look at it. OK. I have a solution. I'm not sure if it is the best, but I would use it.
Here is an article on Helper Resources in FamilySearch.
What is Easy Invitations and how do I use it?
Article Id: 1155, Published November 21, 2020Easy Invitations is a tool on Helper Resources for inviting a member of your ward to participate in a discovery activity at FamilySearch.org. This could be viewing a record hint, reserving a temple ordinance, or engaging in some other discovery experience available through the website.
The person you are inviting must have a FamilySearch account to receive your invitation. He or she will have already received a message about the activity through Family Search Messages. Your invitation notifies the person that a message is waiting for him or her.
Note: Some patrons have reported seeing the names of former ward members included in the names list of Easy Invitations. This is a known bug, and FamilySearch engineers are working to correct it. Please use Easy Invitations to reach out to current members of your ward.
Steps (website)
- At the top of the FamilySearch.org website, click Help.
- In the drop-down menu that appears, click Helper Resources.
- You see a gallery of tools and features. Click the one titled Easy Invitations.
- Scroll through the list of names, until you locate the name of the person you would like to invite.
- Note: The icons to the right of the person’s name tell you the type of activity available for him or her through FamilySearch messaging.
- To the left of the person’s name, click Copy.
- A link has been copied to your computer's clipboard. Use your computer's edit capabilities to paste the link into a message that you can send to the person you are helping. You will need to choose how best to send the message—text, email, and so forth.
- The link takes the person to the Discoveries tab of FamilySearch Messages, where he or she will see messages about discovery activities. He or she will need to browse the messages and click the appropriate button to begin one of the activities (it might be a good idea to tell the person you are inviting if there is more than one).
So there is that.
I looked at the Right hand side of Helper page. It says Easy Invitations on the right of the middle box. Then to the right of that large box, is my picture and PLANNER and offer to ADD SOMEONE.
So I pick a name on the Easy Invitation page. I pick a Ward member and copy their opportunity. Then I go back to the Helper Resources page and choose from the Ward list the person I have copied their Opportunity. I select their name and choose the way to send the opportunity to them.
Before all of that however, I pray about the Easy Invitation list and pick my Ward member, according to the prayer. Then pray on how to word the invitation. Call, email, text. Whichever works for your individual and you. And invite them to look at the Opportunity.
It is scary. I know. I try to introduce myself. Try with people you know first.
Enjoy,
Anitra

One of the first things to do is to make sure the person you want to help has a FamilySearch account and that they have gone to this page and turned on the "Receive and Offer Help" notification flag or they won't get the invitation you send them: https://www.familysearch.org/identity/settings/notifications
Then my second recommendation in helping them is to assist them in navigating all the features of the FamilySearch website so they know how to navigate it for themselves. All the tabs, all the views of the tree, how to edit names, etc. Make sure to show them the Activities tab and the Ordinances Ready feature under the temple tab. You can easily do this overview in about an hour.
Then my third recommendation is to have them pray about where Heavenly Father wants them to work in their family history. Have them write down all their promptings. Then have them take that list back to Heavenly Father in prayer to know where they should start first.
Their promptings may be about building relationships with living family members, or adding photos or memories to the Tree, or working on research on a particular line or adding sources and hints and fixing errors.
If you start out by teaching them about research oriented things and that isn't their interest or what Heavenly Father wants them to do right now, they will be overwhelmed and may lose interest.

I found this today in my studies. Some of it might help you.

To increase Family History work in your ward, get the leaders doing the work first. The leaders will support and promote what they are excited about. Get a list of everyone on the ward council and their counselors and secretaries in all of the quorums and organizations in your ward/branch. Start with the Bishopric first. Help them find and reserve or print out ordinance cards. Then go to the Elders Quorum, Relief Society, Young Men, Young Women, and Primary presidencies.
Ask those leaders to bear testimony of their experiences in Fast meetings and in their quorum or organization meetings. When that starts to happen all of the promised blessings from doing the work will greatly bless your ward/branch.
Have your leaders promote that every member should have their own individual account associated with their membership number and use their own account for all of the work they do.

Are you offering classes via zoom? are you having reminders sent out through whatever communication available about topics to focus on for the month/quarter (i.e. January, create an account or add a picture to your tree) Are you familiar with the app Billion Graves? This allows people to go out to cemeteries and take photos to upload. They are available to transcribe and anyone can do it. It is great for youth as they have difficulty in indexing records because of cursive writing. Going out to a cemetery allows families to go together, or groups and spread out.
