Change of surname?
I have a probable ancestor who I think changed surnames. He is Matěj Jachek, GWV8-FMZ. His birth record has a different surname which I cannot read. https://digi.ceskearchivy.cz/2693/191/1383/1630/44/0. My first question is what is that surname? A possible clue is that in the index where his birth is listed, there is a notation for a birth in 1823 that also may show a change in surname for a Jafek. (https://digi.ceskearchivy.cz/2693/284/3269/2022/49/0 (there you will also see the change from Jafek to Jachek that appears in the birth record)). (Note that the surname "Jachek" also appears sometimes as "Jafek," as you see in a correction to the birth record.) You will see that in Matěj Jachek's further records (e.g., his two marriage records), his father is recorded as Jan Jafek or Jachek, born at Bácovice No. 17, that is, the same as in Matěj's birth record, albeit with the different surname. I am aware of the custom of "roof names" in parts of Bohemia and Moravia. So for my second question, am I looking at a roof name here? If so, is the male who likely got the roof name the father (Jan) or the son (Matěj)? Also note that Jan Jafek is listed as Bácovice No. 17 in the birth and marriage records of his son Matěj, but at Bácovice No. 22 in the birth records of his grandchildren. I am not sure if that is a move, an inaccuracy, or evidence that I am trying to link the wrong people.

This was a good question. In this area people had sometimes surnames after the roof, so this was Račan also known as Jachek. recte = aka.

Thank you very much. You have a great eye for reading those surnames. Any recommendations on how to learn that? Also, after I posted, I did find some evidence that Jan Jachek (now aka Račan) moved into a house formerly owned by a Jachek (who is a relative of mine). So the surname after the roof seems probable.

Thanks. I will look at those webinars. I have seen the Czech Genealogy for Beginnings blog and enjoy it. It is excellent. I also had the chance to see Blanka Lednikca at the last CGSI conference and hear her present. She is excellent. Hopefully I'll see her again (and maybe you too) at the next CGSI conference his October in Milwaukee.
