Hello All, I live in Louisiana, which is a closed record state. I am also African-American. For me,
If anyone comes across records for Oscar Merrick (Any-Born 1845), Pauline Poche/Porche - Oscar's wife (no info currently), Ernest Merrick (Born 1884), Cook Merrick (Born 1885) or Walter Merrick (Born 1887), I will be in your debt. I have much more to ask for but I don't want to be greedy. I found a census record for Oscar from 1900 which indicates he was a widower at that time. Thanks so much and Happy Holidays.

I retrieved the record from US Census, 1900, ED 33 16th Precinct New Orleans, Ward 3 Image 15 of 29. Yes they are the children of Oscar as well as a daughter Jeanne, my Grandmother. I was always told that her Birthday was Dec 19, 1880. Viewing this record says differently. The only brother I ever heard about was Walter. I have no other info on any of them. Due to Hurricane Katrina and now Covid, research is at a minimum. I have looked at State Vital Records website and others. I also know of an alternate spelling, MERRITT. Changing spelling due to whatever circumstances is not uncommon in some families.

Here is a link to a whole book devoted to the Merrick family history that I found by doing a Google search : https://books.google.com/books?id=2rU0AAAAMAAJ&pg=PA300&lpg=PA300&dq=oscar+merrick+family+tree&source=bl&ots=xQAcQDpaBi&sig=ACfU3U0X5a80GyndWvajRFizQnb8Ca1K4A&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwig1ZK2rd3tAhUEHqwKHZvsApY4ChDoATAJegQICRAB#v=onepage&q=oscar merrick family tree&f=false. Also, keep in mind that there may be various different spellings of the last name when you do your search Myrrick Marrick...

@Cerlida Cerlida were the links/resources that @SandraClark9 SandraClark9 shared helpful? I’m curious if you were able to find some answers

One thing you can look at is that there are other census records now. There is other census' before and after 1900. You may pull up other information from those. 1890 census, what does it say?

Yes alternate spelling can be helpful. It can sometimes be helpful to find other living relatives that may have records or know more about people farther down the tree.
There has also been more Freedman's Bureau records put out in recent years also. So there are more possibilities than there used to be.
You can try looking under some of those other names to find more information. And then you can link it all in, and build up the whole tree. Sometimes that's one way of eventually finding other ways to get to the area of the tree you want to eventually go to.
