I have been researching the Rockwell family for nearly 30 years and have quite a database built up.
Any advice on what it involves? Once I launch it, does a group basically run itself, driven by participants' questions and answers, or are there particular responsibilities the "founder" would have for administering it? I just want to facilitate sharing and would certainly want to provide leads for queries if I have found them.@General Questions

@Kenneth W. Rockwell hello and welcome! Sounds like a great idea for a project! You can request to start a group by going to the home page and clicking “create group”, you will submit the requested info and wait for answer. You would be the admin with basic admin duties of course, and you can pretty much be as involved as you’d like.... or you can contact @Dennis J Yancey at the @Family Bible Group; he has started a surname project which is a collection of surnames. Good luck!

How many Rockwell researchers would you be able to invite to a Rockwell group?
Creating the group is the easy part - people becoming members of the group is what can take a lot of work.
Just because you create a group doesnt by itself mean that you will end up with a group of more than just a handful of people. But if you have a large following - yes - this can be a place to do it.
Check out the Yancey group - it is currently the largest surname group on the comunity (of just a handful of surname groups).

you can also leverage an existing group like this one:
and ask questions anbd post questions about a given surname
you can also access this site dedicated to surname research:

tell us more about what your plans would be to make it an active thriving synergy of many Rockwell researchers.

How much of your Rockwell family data is represented in FamilySearch FamilyTree and FamilySearch Memories?

as the admin for the Family Bible Group - and the Family Bible Preservation project
let me ask you
how man family bibles do you know of or are aware of for the Rockwell family?
have such family bibles been uploaded to FamilySearch?

Quite a bit of it, in three major lines out of Connecticut. But that includes the usual mistakes, repeats of century-old published (but incorrect) lineages, etc. I have been going through FamilyTree and seeking out such problems, correcting them when I have the evidence and consulting with previous editors when it's still debatable. A Community page would be one more place for such conversations, and for people to post queries that I might have answers for. I could also post cases of unlinked individuals I find in the Tree or elsewhere for whom I haven't yet found a logical place.

I've seen a few, including in publications. There's was one in my own line whose pages now reside at the Idaho Historical Society.

Thank you. I have decided to go for it and have just submitted the request. I did have a couple of issues with the form: After selecting a region, North America, it insisted on my filling in "Location," allowing only one country. I chose United States, but there is a significant subset up in Canada, so I certainly don't want to suggest they are excluded. Maybe the form should allow multiple selections there? I was going to add that to the Group Description, but that field appears to have a character limit. Maybe that should be expanded. @Dennis J Yancey

I think we are currently under a hiatus in new Community groups
I believe due to underlying upcoming changes to the community.
But I don't know for sure.
I will find out.
also the community can be a great place to exchange information and communicate among fellow researchers
but it was never designed to be a data depository.
so as an example - there is a Yancey Community Group
but all our Yancey files we either keep on a web site I maintain:
http://yanceyfamilygenealogy.org/
and/or - FamilySEarch FamilyTree and FS Memories albums
