I like to use genteam.at. It is a free site but you must register. You can start adding the letters and it pulls up possibilities. Then when you find it you can click on the page icon and it will lead you to the right archives. I will go do some searching. It looks like Lagenburg but I am not finding one. Could you please post more of the document so I can compare letters.

It's tough without being able to see much more of the handwriting on the page to compare it with. If you have a scan of the rest of the page, that might be helpful too. Also, do you have any other clues as to the general area where Peter may have come from? For example, if I know that one of my ancestors was married in a certain town and I am now trying to identify the name of the town they were born in, it may be worthwhile to scan the surrounding towns on an old map to see if any have similar spellings to the one in question. If I had to guess, it looks like it might say something like Layenburg/Leyenburg/Leyneburg. But I'd really like to see more handwriting samples to compare to - especially on the first letter. Could be L, Z, B, K, R, etc. Once you narrow it down to a few possibilities, you can check out the free gazeteer on genteam.at if your ancestor lived in the Austrian, Czech, Slovak or Slovenian Republic.

Here is the rest of the handwritten family tree that relates to Peter. I am trying to decipher the name of the village where Peter in the lower right was, I believe married.

Might it be Bügenburg? B and L are very similar. Unfortunately the connective line between the first and the second character can not be seen well,
I see some accents above the second character, this is why I guess an "ü" there.
Bügenburg is not a location, but a known family name in Germany and Austria

I believe it starts with an L and the third letter g is similar to the g at the end of the word. The pictures show why I think it starts with an L.

I agree that L is the likely first letter. Unfortunately I'm not finding a town on www. genteam.at with any of these spelling variations: Lagenburg, Legenburg, Lugenburg, Lügenburg, Lagneburg, Legneburg, Lugneburg, Lügneburg, Lagenberg, Legenberg, Lugenberg, Lügenberg, Lagneberg, Legneberg, Lugneberg, Lügneberg, Layenburg, Leyenburg, Luyenburg, Lüyenburg, Layneburg, Leyneburg, Luyneburg, Lüyneburg, Layenberg, Leyenberg, Luyenberg, Lüyenberg, Layneberg, Leyneberg, Luyneberg, or Lüyneberg.
I did find these towns with similar spellings, though: Langenberg (there were towns with this name in Bohemia, Silesia, Styria & Austria), Oberlangenberg & Unter Langenberg both in Salzburg, Alt Lundenburg in Moravia, Ziegenburg in Silesia & Styria, & Ziegenberg in Styria. So these might be worth taking a look at. (It would be helpful to know if you have any other clues about which country or area Peter or his relatives may have come from, to narrow down the search).

We were actually wondering if the "L" could be an R. The reason being that the top of the letter does not initiate from the mid left with an upwards stroke, but from the base of the letter. In addition if one looks very closely, there is a very faint curlyQ stroke at the bottom of the top loop that almost looks like it wants to connect to the next letter. Any thoughts? I admit that the R in Rohmann on page 1 is quite different.

Another guess is Regensburg ... a location in Germany.

Here you are a map. This is a place very close to the current Czechia....0 -
I looked again at the page ... in particular page 2 at 75% and I feel it clearly says Regenburg.
Hope this helps. It is under Peter's name. Now the atlas I have says Regensburg ... not sure if the s must be part of all the spellings or if it is a different village.

Thank you everyone for all the help. I will search in these locations. The family was originally from Bohemia, Mahren in present Novy Jicin, and Sternberk Czech Republic. Some of these family members moved to Austria, Germany, and even Alsace, France. They were all artists so they went where the commissions were. So he may be from Austria or Germany, rather than Czech. Thank you.
