Allow link to person ID to open in a new window or tab
When I (occasionally) check some non-standardised place names, it would be enormously helpful if you could just go to an additional window when clicking on the person's ID.
Currently, if I try to research the indviduals tree to see where their parents were born or live (very useful info if the town/village name is common) I cannot get back to the person I was working on. I end up being served a new example.
Even if i could copy the reference it would help as I could paste it into a person search window already open. At the moment I have to retype the reference - which is a slow process.

Unfortunately in many places FamilySearch has DISABLED the normal Browser functions where you can tell it to open the link in a new tab or a new window. I guess that they know best, eh?
Your suggestion in general is something I need on a regular basis. whenever I am examining a list anywhere on the internet, I always open the selections in a new window. That way, my position in the list remains the same and I do not have to RELOAD it every time I finish looking at one of the list elements. When FS's pages FORCES you to leave a list and insists on opening the list element over top of the list you were looking at, it takes much longer to return to the list, and when you do, you have lost your place in the list sometimes forcing you to have to reload page after page to get back to where you were.
FamilySearch, PLEASE stop disabling normal everyday browser functions (such as open link in new window or tab). All you are doing is making things more awkward and difficult for people to use. I really don't care that you are trying to make desktop browsers look the same as mobile ones. It is not appropriate for the application. There is a reason that many people use desktop computers and you are eliminating those reasons by making the desktop access to FS always look like what someone would see on a cell phone.

And since my phone doesn't have the same image size or resolution, I'll stick to my desktop / laptop, thanks.

I tend to copy the person ID, then select the Duplicate option on the browser tab. The new tab opens, I select the person ID in the URL and paste the one I copied over it and hit Enter.
It's not the same as your request, but it might make it a bit easier.0 -
Norrette, when posting a question, comment, idea or complaint, because FamilySearch is such a huge site with so many functions, it is very important to be as precise as possible as to where you find the issue. Are you talking about the website which runs in a web browser or the app which does not? Also, if the app, which version, Apple or Android? Exactly what task are you working on?
From your comment, "When I (occasionally) check some non-standardised place names" I would guess that you are in the "Improve the accuracy of Family Tree" by adding standardized place names section of the site.
If you are using the web version, then when you want to check a person's page in a new page, then just click on the person's name to open the summary card then right-click or control click on the person's name or on the Person link at the bottom of the card to open the page in a new window. (You can, also, just click on the person ID to copy it). I have not seen any lists recently where this does not work. Sometimes it even works directly off of the list without needing to open the summary card first.
If you are using the Apple app, you are not in a browser so the usual browser command are not there but would have to be replicated by the programmers. In the app version of Family Tree, it was only very recently that the ability to have more than one screen at a time was even added. However, the "Improve Place Name" section does not include that multiple screen function so even if you could click on the name or copy the ID, you would have to leave that portion of the app anyway and not be able to get back to where you were.
However, all is not lost! As you are doing, write down the ID numbers of the people you want to research further to make sure you add the standard correctly and just skip those people. Then finish out the list of ten to make sure your additions are saved properly. Then go to the pages of the people whose IDs you copied and add the standardized place name right there. You do not have to add them through the "Improve Place Name" section. While you are there, you might was well go ahead and check their parents and all their siblings. You might end up adding a couple of dozen standardized place names rather than just the one.

Another approach that I find is fairly fast when FS has disabled the browser functions in a particular list (such as search results) is to have a totally separate window open and logged in. Then when you are on the list you are browsing, you go to the link for the person's nam, and then just drag and drop it into the URL field of the separate window.
But again, these are all hacks to get around the fact that FS is disabling useful (and generic) features of the browsers.

Correct. it is something I do when I first log in, and only spend a half hour or so. My post is a wish to make that half-hour more productive.
