What Medical School was available @1700 in England which was also close to Quakers?
Daniel McNichols, my husbands 6th ggfather, studied to be a physician in England. He was b. @1681 in Edinburgh. His name is mentioned once in "Henshaw" as being the father of George b. 1707, who became a Quaker in 1742 in New Jersey. Daniel & Margaret probably came to America in 1706 & settled in the village of Burlington, NJ. This is all the information I have for Daniel. I would like to find his medical records in England & trace his family back to Scotland. Daniel & Margaret were supposedly md. in England. L89N-FKN Thank you for your help.

Regrading "Birth" of "Daniel McNICHOLS" in Scotland ...

Baptism/Christening certainly not found in the website of "ScotlandPeople" in Old Parish Registers of the Church of Scotland (nor, Roman Catholic; or, Other).

I tried with a Year range of 1650 to 1700; and, both, the 'Family Names'/'Surnames' of, "McNichols"; and, "McNicholas", including, "Variant"; and, "Phonetic Matching" - BOTH with the same result:
[ "Nichols"; and, "Nicholas", did not fair any better ].

Hi Brett, Thank you for your searches of Daniel McNichols. That is disappointing that he didn't appear on any of the records. What about the Medical Universities in England where he would supposedly studied to be a Dr. before coming to New Jersey?
Do you also research in Quaker records or could you suggest someone in the Community that I could contact about the Quaker group in England and then here in New Jersey? I was trying to get an idea of Daniel's location there in England because he had associated with, but not joined, the Quakers. I appreciate your help because we have been stuck on Daniel for decades & are hoping that there are some new leads to be had! Carolyn

But, remember, there is the possibility that he did not get "Baptised"/"Christened" in Scotland.

[ eg. the Family may have moved soon after his birth; or, he was just not get "Baptised"/"Christened" ]

Do not rule out Scotland as the place of birth, just yet.

And, another thing to consider, is the 'Family Name'/'Surname' actually "McNICHOLS"?

The actual 'Family Name'/'Surname' could be something slightly differently.

There was not specific page for such; but, there are a number of possibilities ...

The McNichols Family History had mentioned that Daniel was found in Henshaw's Quaker records with the birth of his son George, but that was all. You should also be aware that ScotlandsPeople does not have all records from the non-Church of Scotland denominations. Given his son was involved with the Society of Friends/Quakers, there is probably a higher chance of them being involved with one of these religions. By 1851, non-Church of Scotland religions had twice as many weekly worshippers than the Church of Scotland, according to the one-off religious census taken that year.

Thank you for your reply. We have not found any record, as of yet, that Daniel joined the Quakers. I was hoping to find someone who was familiar with the Quaker records there in England to search for his name there. Also, since he was a Dr., I was hoping to find a record of where he might have gone to medical school. I do not have any other leads for finding his parents. Do you have any ideas of where to start? I appreciate your help.

Carolyn, what makes you assume he got his medical training in England? I ask because two of the best medical training facilities in the British Isles at this time are Edinburgh and Glasgow. Paul

Good question! When we were in Edinburgh a couple of years ago, we went to the record office hoping to find his family & pedigree. They didn't find them & when we mentioned that he was a Dr. they said to try London. Brett (above) did some searches for Daniel's family records & did not find them either. What would you suggest? We would really like to find out more about the McNichols family. The page from a family history book on the McNichols that I had attached above, is the earliest record we have. The owner has not scanned the book but that page is the earliest.) Thank you for your interest.

I am interested in where you found the image that is posted. It looks like a page in a book and I have come accross the name John Royal Nicholas before in my research. Do you have any further information about this source or if there are additional copies if it is a published book?

So glad that u answered my post. On Daniel's FamilySearch.org page L89N-FKN, I posted that a Don McNichols had shared that page from John Royal McNichols with me. John Royal had self-published the book and Don did not have any further information. No further copies that I know of, but haven't checked the internet since last year. Do you think that u are related to our McNichols family? Are u in England? When we were in Scotland a couple of years ago, we went to the Records Office in Edinburgh but they could not find a pedigree for the McNichols. I would appreciate corresponding with you about the McNichols.

If my research is accurate, I am a direct decendent of Daniel McNichols. The United States in my home and I have recently traveled to Edinburgh in the summer of 2019. My visit the same records office as didn't reveal any new records about the McNichols either. I mainly use Ancestry.com (lisasean1997) as I am not too familiar with mechanics FamilySearch. Feel free to contact me anytime and maybe we'll eventually find that missing link to the UK.

Just viewed your pedigree on ancestry.com & found that your Pearl Alfred McNichols is our William's 1875 brother! The DNA says you & Garlan are 4-6th cousins. Hurrah for cousins. On FamilySearch.org there is more info on the Duncan's if you would like that. We are also in the States.

Thanks for the updates and I will check out the Duncan's info as you recomend. I wish there was a way to meld the info from both websites together. I have some links under the Daniel McNichols Ancestry profile that I have gathered when searching other sites online. There are a jumble of conflicting dates and places of birth for him but nothing concrete.

Yes, pls check out FamilySearch. Garlan's cousin gathered the info that we have there. There are a lot of Quakers on his line. Why do u think the McNichol's were not in the Edinburgh records? We need someone on the ground there in London to check out Daniel's father going to medical school to become a Dr. - don't u think?

I spent my time looking for Daniel in all of the emmigration records. Perhaps I should have been looking up other sources from the late 1600's but I was very limited on time. It's tough to find an ancestor when you can't narrow it down to a definate location within a country. If there were some church record that would show parents of a child or a death record showing deceased kin, then that would help greatly I think. Yes, I wish there was a local in the British Isles that would be willing to access hard copies of records or follow up leads.
