There is an Italian Military war dead database managed by the minister of Defense. Which war, WwI or WWII? (suspect its WWI). I will try and find that database address for you. Note: place of birth and date is good...helpful to also have the fathers name too.....Italian names are never as unique as you think..even in the same village. I have 5 women all with the same exact names from the same village in my tree. All different parents, spouses, and children and all born within 8 years if each other. It's an extreme example certainly but makes the point. Expect an update with URL today.

A Santin Giovanni di Antonio is reported as dead in 1916 in a shipwreck.
He was born in Azzano Decimo, however birth date was 1884.

When I have a discrepancy in birthdate that large (involving the same parents, birth place. etc,) I check for the death of the first child prior to the second birth. Italians sometimes re-used the same name on a subsequent child's birth if a child with that name died young earlier. The only way to confirm the theory is to find the death record for the child born in 1871 and a birth record for the child born in 1884. That is quite a gap though. If you are positive about the parents, that might explain the discrepancy in your information versus the military record. I've also seen several situations where a child and his mother died, the father remarried and had another child to which he gave the same name as his previously deceased child. Note-- the gap in birth dates *may* also indicate a second wife. You have to find the original records to confirm or eliminate any theory.
