Chan in Canton
Does anyone have Chan,陈 in 中礼 village in Taishan, China?
One of my great grandfather's name was: 陈崇昌, birthdate: unkknown, might be in the 1880's?. Born and died in village name: 中礼 in Taishan.

Hi Leah, the following link shows 7 records of Chen Jiapus in Taishan county. You probably have to go through each of the Jiapu to find the name.
I suggest you start search that name from Generation Chart 世系圖 pages of each Jiapu， trying to find if there are group of people in that generation have the same character of 崇 or 昌 in their names.

I don't even recognized the names of the lists of cities, but I don't read/speak Chinese. This is my first time trying to do Chinese family search and I'm glueless of the process. Here is more information of the city and village.

My friend, Henry Tom, is certainly correct, your 中礼 (中禮) village is located within Luk Chueng Heung 六村鄉 (Six Village District). The key to finding your great grandfather 陳崇昌 is to find the jiapu for your specific village 中礼.
My friend, Lena Stout, has made a good suggestion of looking through the Chen jiapu for Taishan county. However, I can already see from titles that a few do not belong to your village.
I would take Henry up on his suggestion and obtain the Chen zupu he has that is a Luk Cheung Heung zupu. Keep in mind, however, there are many Chen villages within Luk Chueng Heung. The Village DB which Henry referred to you lists 76 Chen villages within this heung. Even if this is not your village jiapu or zupu and you do not find your great grandfather's name, it is often worth having one from the same local area as you can often learn of the clan history -- migration patterns, common ancestors, etc. from these related genealogies.
I also have a copy of a Luk Chueng Heung zupu. I am not sure if this is the same one Henry has because this PDF copy has 804 pages. I did a quick perusal and did not find your great grandfather's name. I didn't expect to, however, because this zupu is from a village slightly to the north of 中礼 called提领大楼. On the attached map taken from this zupu, it shows the location of this village marked by a red dot. Your village area is just to the south marked by the mountain diagram and the green rectangle designating the 中礼 Village committee office. BTW, you can also find your village on Google Maps.
I did note a few things as I searched for your great grandfather's name among the various pedigree charts in the zupu. There were a few branches that for Generation 22 used the generation name of 昌 in the third character position, the same as with your great grandfather's name. The majority of branches used 宜 as the generation name. However, as you conduct your searches, you may want to pay particularly close attention to Generation 22, which is about the generation your great grandfather might be found. Another thing I noted was that the generation name often used for Generation 23 was 宗. This causes me to wonder if the 崇 character in your great grandfather's name is possibly mis-transcribed. Or if possibly your great grandfather has an alternate name such as a 字 or a 號 that might use have the 宜 or 宗 characters in his name. You may search through other documents or ask family members if it is possible that your great grandfather had other names. He may be listed in the jiapu by an alternate name to the one you know.
