How do I learn about having students share their research with me on FamilySearch? I am teaching an
I am also looking for a range of reading materials in addition to things I've found. I am looking for brief examples (short book is alright) of the following: 1) Exceptionally well-written first-person accounts on discovering family history; 2) Academic writing on issues in family history and genealogy. By "issues" I mean points of discussion, persuasion, differences of opinion but addressed in a manner appropriate to academics. 3) For myself -- other examples of similar classes or approaches.
Just in case you want to know, I have a collection of readings that I've taken from first-hand accounts and essays (for example, Pearl Buck and Doris Lessing on their fathers), a blog on some possible issues (but not as carefully researched as I'd like), passages taken from records and accounts in my possession (with permission), a copy of the song lyrics to "Kilkelly, Ireland" (which any genealogist should really appreciate). I could use more. My field of research is Chinese literature and I have unintentionally accumulated lots of resources relevant to Chinese families, but I'm trying to avoid going too deep into one region. Among those, to the interested, I strongly recommend Wild Swans by Chang Jung and Ancestors by Frank Ching. Too bad I have no Chinese ancestry! (At least not known yet. Maybe some scholar went west as a refugee and wound up in ancient Scotland. I kind of suspect as much.)

Whether, in a 'Face to Face'; and/or, in an 'On-Line', environment ...

They could just provide you with:

- the relevant 'FamilySearch Person Identifiers' (PIDs)

- Printouts (eg. 'Hard-copy'; and/or, 'PDF') of the "Pedigrees" and "Family Group Records"

of the individuals/persons who they are researching.

As an aside ...

And, if you are a Member of the Church, you can use, either:
(1) the "Help Others" feature/function/facility; and/or,
(2) the "Planner" (formerly: the "Consultant Planner").

With the "Help Others", you can only work one at a time.

Whereas, with the "Planner" (formerly: the "Consultant Planner") you can add up to 300 Users/Patrons to your planner.

"Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch' is NOT like "Ancestry_com" or the like.

We DO NOT have "Private"/"Personal" 'Trees' in "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch' like other "Websites"; and/or, 'standalone' personal programmes.

We do not even, own; or, manage; and, are NOT even responsible for, the "Deceased" individuals/persons in "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch'.

"Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch' is built on a "Open Edit" Platform - hence, why any registered User/Patron can "Edit" (ie. Add, Delete; and/or, Change) ANY "Deceased" individual/person in "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch'.

The "Deceased" individuals/persons DO NOT reside with the User/Patron who initially created them - they are "Public".

Thanks! Yes, Roots is a classic and really got things rolling, but it's a little long for this class. Thanks for the reminder -- I'll pull some things out of it. Especially timely now, I think, because family history helps both individuals and communities find a place.
I checked this book out Ancestors and Relatives: Genealogy, Identity, and Community by Eviatar Zerubavel, but I think it's a little too scattered. It's the first book to try to come up with a "sociology of genealogy," and usually the first book of its kind is a bit rough. I think Zerubavel does a brave job, but I think he adds complexity to a complex topic.
The truth is that family history gets deep into who we are and what we're doing, to such an extent that I think it's hard to take a step back and look at it objectively. Besides, most of us don't need to be objective about it. I just need to attend RootsTech! That's what I need!

Would you be interested in me sharing my story about how I found out what I could do in Family Tree after being told all my life that "It's done as far as we can go" OR "We've hired a professional to work on it"? I took an introductory class at BYU when I was there in my twenties and found it very frustrating because it was all on how to start, basically, from the beginning. I could never get help on what to do when your ancestors have already been found way back. I'd be happy to share if that's something you're looking for.
