Trying to find records for Phillip (Felipe) Escalada
I've been working on this for some time now and I have hit several walls. He is the only grandfather I can not get further information on as far who his parents were. His name was Felipe or Phillip Escalada born on 20 September 1880 in Santander, Spain. His mothers last name might have be Hedesa.
I know he left Spain in his teens and went to Mexico City and in 1905 he arrived in the US and applied for citizenship in Garden City Kansas. He died in 1951 and is buried there. For the life of me I can't make the link to his parents in Spain.
Part of the problem might be that I don't speak Spanish and I'm lost on how to contact the Parish or the civil records in Santander or if there is a better way of going about this?
Any help and direction would be great. Thank you.

What naturalization records in the U.S. have you searched?
You will need to narrow down the place of birth to more than the province of Santander. If he was born in the city of Santander it will be easier, but you need more specifics on place of birth.

This is how the record reads as from the only Immigration and Naturalization record record I can find (Garden City, Finney County, Kansas):
- 76. 1910 Escalada, Philip, 30, laborer. b. Santander, Spain. 20 Sept, 1880 Comp. dark, 5'8" 165 lbs, hair brown. From Mexico City. 10 Nov, 1905
and from another part of the same record:
- 1913 23. Escalada, Philip, b. Mexico City, 20 Sept 1880. Final #124000
The second entry for birth place is wrong.
I would upload the image but restricted to text only. I have surmised that he left Spain and went to Mexico City and then headed north after a short time there. From what I gather, he was born in Santander, Spain unless I'm reading that wrong. This is the only record I have found so far that states birth a place of birth other than what my Dad thinks. I've been looking for ship passenger lists from Spain to Mexico with not luck.
Family legend has it, he was on the run from something that went on in Spain and that might be why there is a road block. He might have been in trouble with the Catholic church. I know his birth date and death dates are accurate.
My dad relayed the following to me regarding a letter in the family possession:

"Dads name was Felipe Escalada Hedesa. (Hedesa was his mother's last name?)"
"Dad's brother's name was Jose and Jose's wife's name was Bellina. (This is from a letter written in 1921 from
Jose to dad. It also has the word "Castaneda" on it. This could be the name of the town in Spain where dad was
born?)"

On my grandfathers grave marker his name is spelled Phillip Escalada
It is all mystery that has everyone in the family baffled. I am of the opinion he was born in Santander city

Thanks for the additional information. I looked briefly at the Castaneda parish registers online (on familysearch), but the records seem incomplete. With that said there were people with the last name of Escalada. None with the combination of what you have with the mother's surname.
My recommendation at this point is to fill out the civil registration order form online. It's free and you can submit requests for more than one municipality (separate requests). Civil registration started in Spain in 1871 so his birth record should be there, you just have to narrow it down to the right municipality. Good morning from Spain..
I find this for you..
First link and image is the obituary of Jose María's wife, the brother of Felipe.
You can see there the name of the other brother and sister of them, Francisco and Petronila. the dead was in Guipuzcoa (Pais Vasco) but published in Castañeda (Cantabria)..
Second link is the call for the military servico for Jose Mª.. in Fuenmayor (La Rioja) there the name of his parents and his year of birth appear. (1871)
One curiosity about spanish for your next search.. we have two last names, normally first from father and the second from mother and never never a woman lost her last names when she marry someone.Parish Searches must be done in site because only a few dioceses have files digitized
but you can make searchs in "Registro Civil" it is free and it begins in the year of 1870 approximately..

I recommend that you order the civil registration birth record of Jose Maria Escalada de la Hedesa. It appears that he was born in 1871 in Fiuenmayor, La Rioja. If it is not there, then try Castaneda.

Carlos, what you shared is worth its weight in gold. For the first time in our family in the US we now have names of family beyond Phillip (Felipe). This has brought tears of joy to my eyes. Thank you. Don't you worry about your English. I have been trying to learn Spanish as I research our family tree and your ability to communicate far out paces my ability to speak Spanish!
