Bi-Weekly Tip of the Week from Mary Moore
Writing Your Own Story
Recently, we focused on telling stories about our ancestors…but what about you? Have you written your story?
Here are some hints to help you get started:
- Try doing it one event at a time -- not chronologically.
- It is much less daunting and a lot more fun.
- You will be more likely to include events that may not have been recorded.
- Set up a folder in your computer for stories and begin jotting down events in your life.
- You don’t have to do the whole story immediately…just key words that will spark a memory.
- Once you begin this process, it will amaze you the flood of memories that come back to you.
What to write about? The list is endless:
- Learning to drive a car.
- Your first childhood memory.
- School, classmates.
- Siblings.
- Trials you’ve been through.
- Places you lived (describe each room of your home, and where you played outdoors).
- Games you played as a child (your grandchildren will love this since all they have are devises).
- Adventures, i.e., “I built snow forts.” “I played paper dolls.” etc., to name just a few.
- Google “Writing Your Life Story” and discover what comes up.
- Go to the FamilySearch Wiki for great ideas at https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/index.php?search=Writing+your+life+story&title=Special:Search&go=Go
