When I'm trying to translate death records for cause of death, I have been typing the letters I see in written Russian and putting them into google translate and sometimes it works and an illness or other cause of death emerges, but there are times I must not picking up the letters properly because the translation does not give me a cause of death. I'm hoping to come at it from a different angle to find the answers! Thanks for your direction!

That's a good resource, thanks @Glenn R Whicker The Russian Genealogical Word list on the FamilySearch wiki is also helpful as it includes many common causes of death. Creating a resource with causes of death translations and examples from records is on my long list of projects to do in the future, but for now the Wiki is a good source
Keep in mind that many causes of death as they appear in records will be in genitive case as they have the preposition от (sometimes appears as отъ in documents, they are the same) which means they died of or died from something.
