I need help helping a friend find records of her family in Latvia.
A good place to start would be finding the birth record of her mother, Elsa Francesca Sophie Ojason, born 16 October 1911 in Riga, Latvia. "Ojason" could be Swedish and spelled "Öjersson" or "Öjesson". Elsa's father was Karl Gustav? Ojason and Elsa's mother was Olga? I have put the information we think we know in FamilySearch Family Tree at https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/LBPV-GQ8 My friend would like to find out more about her ancestors. Can someone help us get started?
Thanks,
Gary Romsaas

Records for Riga, Latvia are online at http://www.lvva-raduraksti.lv/en.html. You can register for a free account and then you will be able to search for the records. There are many parishes in Riga. It would be helpful to know the name of the parish.

Thanks. I did find a few "Ojasone" names in the list of residents at that site. I'll check with my friend to see if she can recall a church name in Riga.

Gary, I found Elsa listed in the Passenger Lists of Displayed Persons.
In the passenger list, Elsa is stated as having been born in Latvia on 16 Oct 1911, departing from Bremerhaven (from Bremerhaven resettlement camp) via the ship USS General Taylor on 14 Oct 1956, a cook, of Lutheran religion, and divorced; and she had married a - - Wedler, who must be the Albert Eduard Reinhart Wedler listed in the FamilySearch tree (see linked passenger list). This is the same immigration year, first given name, married name, and birth date listed on her FamilySearch page. This also gives you the religion (Lutheran) whose records you'll want to look at.
Does your friend have any other records, such as Elsa's marriage record (or date or place), that might give clues as to what parish in Riga Elsa would've been born in? Maybe an address?
Elsa’s last residence, where she died on Friday, 27 March 1998, was Jacksonville, Phoenix, Maryland, Baltimore, USA (see linked SSDI index). (Note that her married surname may sometimes be written Vedlere.)

Thanks for the information. Elsa's daughter Karin (also listed in the passenger list) is my friend who is asking the questions about her ancestors. Karin says her mother (Elsa) and Father (Albert Eduard Reinhart Wedler ) met in a German aircraft factory in Rostock, Germany during World War II. Perhaps they were married in Rostock, Germany. I don't think Karin has any more information but I can ask.
These are the names I find at http://pases.arhivi.lv/index.php?temavb=en :
Surname Given name Fathers name Date of birth Place of birth Place of origin
Ojasone Anna Margarete Johans 1872-08-09 Rīga Rīga
Ojasone Elza Franciska Kārlis 1911-10-16 Rīga
Ojasone Olga 1888-09-24 Rīga
Ojasone Olga Juris 1888-09-24 Rīga
I don't have access to MyHeritage but I see there is in Latvia, Riga, Internal Passport Holders Index 1918 - 1940 information on Elsa Franciska Sofija Vedlere.
