I am Rodney Nanney, a descendant of the Nanney clan that moved from Virginia into western North Carolina before the Revolutionary War, and stayed until the 1960s. My parents' generation scattered to the four winds, so I am a native Michigander.
My uncle started me on this path by paying a professional genealogist to research his family's ancestry in the 1970s. I understand that he was looking for the rumored Indian ancestor, as that heritage would help him with a land purchase he wanted to make at the time. He didn't find it, but he shared the results. The researcher took the line back to Robert Nanney of Massachusetts (1614-1663, 29HB-8L4), but noted the "weak link" [and vague pirate-related family stories] of the ancestor(s) between him and the earliest for-certain direct line ancestor, who is John Wyatt Nanney (1719-1789, LHPL-2VQ).
I enjoy solving the mysteries that have come up in my research. That "pirate" [Samuel Nanney (1659-1685, LZJS-P97) is one that may never get confirmed beyond the family tales, but there are others I have been able to solve along the way. I did manage to turn up the origins of the "Indian ancestor" - two generations beyond where the professional left off in the 1970s and not on the Nanney line.

I really think it should have been discredited years ago
just that people keep "resurrecting" the original theory/claim.
Seems people just wanted to have a person by person link to the old world Royal Nanneys
and also wanted to believe in the fanciful idea of an Indian princess.

I understand the history and the controversy. We've chatted in the past about it via email, I'm pretty sure. I don't take any particular side, although I do like the notion of possibly having a pirate in the family line. I will admit that I have resisted past (and will continue to resist future) efforts to disconnect my Nanney line from Robert Nanney. It is the linkage based on best available information. Twice over the years the FamilySearch Purity Police have removed the links citing their purity standards based on whatever genealogical tome they view as the Holy Writ. The second time I restored the links I filed a complaint with FamilySearch citing abusive behavior. No one has touched it since.
The standard for a change ought to be: Do you have better sources or new documentation to prove your change is more accurate? Otherwise, leave it be until better information is available. Absence from their Holy Writ of New England genealogy is not reason enough to delete the link.

I was careful in what I wrote: I and others are certain of the line back to John Wyatt Nanney. That line back to him is as sure as we can make it for now. Various stories exist about his parents and beyond, but various issues also exist that make sure connections further back problematic in one way or another. That does not mean there is no connection, only an absence or incompleteness of data.
This thread is a place to introduce ourselves, not to debate whether Samuel Nanney (the proverbial pirate) existed or is a direct line ancestor of mine. I've read the same stuff you have (much of it on your excellent collection of online resources), and definitely debated it with the FamilyTree Purity Police as much as I will ever wish to do so. I am completely content to leave the connection in place until such time as someone can prove through better data that a different connection is more accurate. If you wish to debate that topic, please feel free to open up a new thread, but you will not see much from me on the topic beyond "let it be for now."

I totally agree that the group here should focus on getting to know various Nanney family researchers and not any spirited debate on the subject. I totally agree with you.
and will leave it at that here in the community where we should make all feel welcome and not isolated.
But I am very much interested in the subject - and I did feel that there was proof Katherine had no living heirs.
but we can pursue that off line. if we even want to pursue it at all.
I would hope that both of us would focus on making members of this community feel welcome and not debate. I totally agree.

My name is Debbie Harvell Albright. I live in Melbourne, Florida. My father, Joe Lee Harvell, jr., died in 2004. He worked without many of the support tools we have today researching our family. Our earliest Harvell married one of the Sarah Nanney’s in 1848. Both Sarah and her husband died during the civil war. We have good reason to suspect that Sarah was a daughter to Randal Nanney because they can be found in the 1850 census living ‘next door’. I’ve been to the courthouse in Rutherford, but many documents were lost in a fire, and no relevant information can be found. I would value any family bible data out there regarding this Sarah, and her husband, William Richard Harvell. Thank you

Thank you, sir. In my Ancestry Family Tree, my Sarah Nanney is named Sarah/Sally. Do you have any info on the Sally in your data? There is also an Aunt Sarah/Sally and a niece Sarah/Sally....still a 4th one born around 1900....this is challenging at times.
