Please be cautious and careful updating the Yancey Family Tree in FamilySearch Family Tree.,
I just wanted to share my gratitude for all of you who have joined the group
and so many of you wanting to better record and document the Yancey family
but also wanted to just remind everyone
that especially since FamilySearch Family Tree is a collaborative database
we should be very cautious in making updates to the family tree if we don't at least have some sort of reference to a primary source or a secondary source that refers to a primary source.
Although Familysearch doesnt prevent you from entering data if you don't have a source document - they do really want you to be relatively sure of your information (though anyone - including myself can be wrong about a given detail)
when you are entering a Familysearch entry into the family tree and they ask you about "Why you know this information is true/correct" - - - answers like "it came from a GEDCOM, or it came from "ancestry" etc. are not really acceptable answers.
When adding info to FamilySearch family tree - please try to limit your updates to things for which you have supporting documents - - bible records, census records, deeds, marriage records, military records etc etc.
saying something "came from a gedcom" really adds no value - nor gives us any indication of whether something is true or not - nor really gives us enough info to be able to track down the original source.
here is a good story to drive the point through:
