CROWDSOURCING - a case study of its application in FamilySearch
[ !!! please ensure to click - "expand post" !!! or you will miss part of the post]
With the arrival of computers, the Internet, and mass electronic communication and collaboration in recent decades - the possibilities of large amounts of people working together to accomplish a specific task is enormous.
Check out this videos about Crowd Sourcing and other related subjects and what they really mean:

Sample applications of CROWD-SOURCING that I have been working on
include loading large amounts of genealogical materials to FamilySearch albums
and then working with many others in tagging (linking these items to FamilyTree entries)
Note that even though I create the album and upload the items.
I can then in turn share the address of the album with others - and they have access automatically to tag these items.
Some projects I have worked on (and continue to work on) include:
Family Bibles <click here> (all surnames)
(over 800 entries tagged)
Yancey Family Biographies <click here>
(over 500 entries tagged)
Newspaper articles [click here]
(overt 1600 entries)
Needlework Samplers [click here] (all surnames)
(over 200 entries)
I dont share these above to promote these projects
rather I am sharing this with others to let them know what is possible
and what THEY can do on genealogical projects that may seem overwhelming
NOTE: We should all stay in compliance of whatever rules exist within FamilySearch as to the promotion of genealogical projects and be careful not to to overstep guidelines.
But I wanted to emphasize the possibilities of uploading things to ALBUMS - and then working collaboratively with others on such projects using the album features of FS.
JUST SERVE is another crowd sourcing entity with huge potential.
I have used it to be able to promote my own FamilySearch projects and get others involved.
PLEASE NOTE
All of the projects I have been involved with are (non commercial and with no financial incentive) and aim to help FamilySearch be more inclusive of information I have access to - as well as ensuring the info I have is made accessible to other Family Search users.
Making Family Search BETTER is the whole goal here . Any personal or financial incentives are avoided entirely.
FAMILYSEARCH INDEXING - is probably the "flagship" example of "crowdsourcing"
and has produced incredible results.
