I remember reading this when they found this coffin! Back in 2011, construction workers were excavating a pit in Elmhurst, Queens when they found an iron coffin containing the well-preserved body of a young African-American woman.
Elmhurst was an area with freed slaves at the time of this woman's death.
Iron coffins were used started in 1849. These iron coffins cost $100. A wooden casket was $2. The iron coffins would seal a coffin airtight, and it would allow the casket to be shipped long distances. However there was a window for the mourners to view the face of the deceased.
This woman died of small pox. It was estimated that she was around age 30. The video shares some incredible details/clues to figure out who this woman was. The techniques used to identify this woman, are useful suggestions for doing genealogical research.
This video is a bit graphic, but it is very informative! Thanks Dennis for sharing.
