I could be wrong, but the name apparently seems to be Chianchesotto.
Now, in the list of municipalities in the province of Avellino where Santángelo in scala, is located, there is a town called Chianche, the addition "sotto" (below) could refer to a fraction ....

I am sure you are correct as the family is from Santa'ngelo in Scala. I could not read the writing well enough to even figure it out on a map of Avellino Province. You are also probably correct indicating it was a frazione. Thank you very much for helping me out.

An alternative reading could be Chianchetelle, a hamlet of Chianche.
the reading ...tto could be instead ...lle, where the final of the "e" makes a curl back, making the "ll" look like "tt"

Hello Paolo, You are correct. Another visitor to the site figured out that the name the village was Chianche too but was probably what is common in Italy, a "Frazione". Therefore he said it would translate to Chiancesotto which then makes perfect sense. So you are both correct. I usually can read 19th Century Italian cursive pretty well, but I just couldn't make this one out. Thanks for your help.

Paolo, either way, the only village that I can find on a map or Google is Chianche, without the suffix sotto or lie. Either way you both helped me get to the village Chianche which I couldn't read anyway.

You are right, in fact Chianchetelle is very near (abt 2 km) to Chianche, being a "frazione" of it.

In case you then need to look for church records, Chianchetelle has their own at Chiesa di Santa Margherita.

Now I understand what you mean. The curve in the final "a" is making the two "l's" look like "t's" and that makes sense. But the fifth letter from the end doesn't look like a "t" as it isn't crossed? What do you think? Sorry to be picky. I appreciate the help greatly.

As for the way mr Alessandro Zaccaria, major, used to write the "t", I can agree it's not the cleanest.
You can find other examples in the same text - on line 5: "Principato Ultra" and "Giuseppantonio"; in both cases the "t" looks like an "e", however......

Paolo or Giovanni, if you don't mind, may I send you another record that I have been working on for a year. It is a marriage record for a widow, Anna Felice di Marino. It references her first husband, Donato Sciarra, who died in a village in August 1860, that was not in his home town of Fara San Martino, Chieti. He died in a Papal State village in 1860. I can not figure out the name of the Commune in which his death occurred and was recorded. Valliscorsa? Anyway I don't see anything close to this spelling on a current map and I've tried looking at old maps as well. It is on line #8. Here is the link:

Thank you for responding. I suppose the spelling of the village was slightly changed from Vallis Corsa to Vallecorsa. Would there be any civil records for a Papal State village in 1860? Or do they only exist after 1870?
