I found a potential relative in an obituary. However, I have no record to which to add his source. I created a source box reference, but I can't flesh out his information unless he's already tied to my tree. How can I create his source record?

You can create a profile record for anyone - even if they are not tied to your tree.
To add someone in FamilySearch who is not tied to your specific tree - click on
FAMILY TREE, TREE, RECENTS, ADD UNCONNECTED PERSON"
