Question about indexed locations
Event Place | Piaten, Insterburg, Ostpreußen, Preußen, Deutschland |
---|---|
Event Place (Original) | Mezhdureche, , Mezhdureche, OstPreussen, Deutschland |
The above is the indexed information that came from a marriage record for . When I look at the actual record, it shows that the marriage location was Metschullen. Why didn't it get indexed as Metschullen? Is Piaten connected to Metschullen somehow?
Here is the original record for Rahel Daniel marrying Samuel Lehmann on 19 October, 1832. (When I do my research, should I always look at the original document and use that information if it is different than what was indexed?)
Thanks very much…Nancy Crawford

The issue is not an indexed location but the result of an algorithm designed to transform locations to the standardized location. Unfortunately, the algorithm has design flaws. It often picks the first similar place name whether it is on the same continent or not.
@SerraNola Please another series for your list.

You should use the information on the original document, to the extent that it is readable. In this case, the town recorded is definitely Metschullen. Here's a link to the town from Meyers Gaz - https://www.meyersgaz.org/place/20176004
And here is the link for Piaten, which is less than 10km to the west of Metschullen.
