Calogero Farruggia "da unione illegittima" (born of an illegitimate union)
He was born 6 Oct 1878 of the union of Vincenzo Farruggia and an unmarried, unrelated woman. (The woman is not named)
IN THE MARGIN … it says that Calogero Farruggia was legitimized when Vincenzo Farruggia married Giovanna Bonaffino 8 Jan 1885 in Pietrapezia. Sadly, there are no marriage records for 1885, nor is there a 10-year index that inlcudes 1885.

You are lucky that Pietraperzia church records are available in FamilySearch. Ironically, according to the church baptism record of Calogero (entry no. 57, https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-XCCS-RHN?i=347&cat=1546860), his parents married in the church on 22 Jul 1894:

Vincenzo is son of deceased Calogero and of deceased Rosa Strazzante. Maria Giovanna is daughter of Aurelio and of Ignazia Giglio. No ages are provided.
