Daniel was a former Cuirassier. Does that help with deciphering the German text? Mother was Magdalena. Marlena a nick name?

The first letter of the unknown word looks strange and there is no material for comparison in this clip. If it is an "R" the word could be "Reiters" (horseman) which corresponds to Cuirassier/Kürassier.

Marlena is a contracted short form of the biblical name Maria Magdalena.
