Looking for Grandmother - Nicolena Bonello-Gagliano
My grandmother was born Nicolena Bonello on 2 February 1888 in (possibly) Sicily(ia), Italy. She came to America on a ship about 1891 traveling with her Aunt Philippa Gagliano. They arrived in America through the port of New Orleans. She grew up in Iberville Parish, Louisiana.
She married Gaspera Mirable (bile). She died on18 January 1932 in Louisiana.
I cannot find her family (parents' names or her relatives) in Italy. Have searched for a long time trying to find out who my great grandparents are. The areas I've been searching in Italy are: Gibilena (possibly the village), Trapani (state), Sicily, Italy.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. You can reach me at (phone number removed) or my email at (email removed).

Do you have access to Ancestry.com ? Most of the answers you are seeking may be found there on a couple of pages. Let me know if you can access Ancestry links. If not I will send you a private message.
Long story short - Gaspare Mirabile naturalized. He has rather extensive Lousisiana Naturalization records on Ancestry - more so than is usually found. Within those records, he clearly states that BOTH he and Nicolina were born in Poggioreale, Trapani, Sicily, Italy. Using the birth date provided for Nicolina, I have yet to find her birth record. However, judging from the surnames in this town, such as Salvato, Chiappetta and Gagliano, it is clear this is the correct town - note the names of ALL of the people travelling with Filippa and Nicolina on that 1891 passenger manifest and you will see the same names. Now, of course, I will not be convinced until I find the birth of either Nicolina or Gaspare, and I do not see either one. So, we'll see.
Records for Poggioreale can be found here:

Also, on Ancestry, there is an elaborate tree (which may or may not be accurate) for this entire family. Of course, it is entirely possible that this is YOUR tree on Ancestry. It is owned by someone with the Mirabile surname. In that tree, Nicolina is stated to be the daughter of Anthony Gagliano and Filippa Salvato. Since you say Filippa was her aunt, it is possible they adopted Nicolina if Nicolina's parents died. If this is in fact your tree, then the answer to the location is there in Gaspare's Naturalization papers. When you open those images always click backwards and forwards to see ALL of the papers for a particular person.
I will keep you posted if I find anything else.
My best
S.

Take a look at this page. It's a passenger list for a ship bound from Palermo to New Orleans in 1891. It lists Filippa Salvato 35, Francesco Gagliano 9, and Nicolina Bonello 3. Italian women are known legally by their maiden names, so I'm guessing Filippa was married to a Gagliano; Francesco is probably her son, and Nicolina her niece.
