How do you add a spouse?

One would think this should just be a very straightforward thing to do - - - but its not. because there are security and privacy issues whenever you add a LIVING person to your family tree . and for the same reasons there are limitations that prevent you from linking to a living person that someone else has entered.
This area where "living people" are entered into the system - is called a "private space" and only you will have access to people in your private space. And you wife will only be able to access people in HER private space. . . . and never the twain shall meet. Note that for the most part "private spaces" are totally transparent to the user (i.e. you do not go to a different place to enter a person into the private space - its just that the system stores the data differently than it does for a deceased person)
I think it does work just a bit different for LDS members. but still the general rule is that living people you add others cant access.
so you may be forced to entered a record for your spouse - separate and apart from your wife's record - and then (if for example her parents were deceased - you could link the record you create for her to her deceased parents - since there is no block of access to deceased people.)
This would not be a complex issue - if each person had their own private family tree (even for deceased people) but that is not how it works - it is one massive database that we all access - so FS has to have special rules in place to ensure living people who are entered into FS are restricted as far as who can see them - only accessed by the person who entered them.
sorry the answer is not more straightforward.

So does that mean if you have a deceased couple who has a living child and that living child is entered into 2 different private spaces that the deceased couple now has two linked private records for the same child? What happens when the living child dies and now there are 2 global records for the same child? Are the records automatically merged?

ultimately they could potentially be merged. I dont think it would be automatic.

Thats one reason that many people do not "go all out" and enter all there living relatives into FS.
Many people simply wait until they are deceased. BUT there is nothing preventing it - and many people indeed do enter all the living people they want into FS. Its a personal choice.
