TRIESTE Seaport in 1837/ Death of a Sea Captain
I have several questions about 1837 Trieste seaport.
1)Where was the seaport at that time? Is that location still within the city of Trieste today?
2)My ancestor was a Sea Captain and was badly injured in an accident while the ship he owned, the John Jay, was being loaded with cargo. He died in Trieste in March of 1837. Was there a church near the harbor that was the church that sailors would attend when in port? Maybe a separate or seaman's church existed?
3) Is there a cemetery in Trieste where a seaman from another country would more likely be buried? Captain James Goodday died, but his son was also on the voyage and may have tended to arrangements.
4)Were any seaman's organizations in existence in 1837.
5)Are there port records archived somewhere?
THANKS for any suggestions!

You probably need to find someone with expert local knowledge of Trieste.
FamilySearch has only a few church records for Trieste in this era and only one had death records that I saw. I looked and didn't find your ancestor listed in March 1837.
But like most of Europe, I suspect if your ancestor was buried in Trieste that long ago, the grave is no longer there. Most graves in Italy and other parts of Europe where land is scarce are just term rentals for 25-50 years or so, after which time the contents are moved to a common ossuary and the grave is reused.
As far as port records, you will have to contact the State Archives of Trieste. They hold the records of the Capitaneria di porto di Trieste.
