Renamings of Greek settlements in the 20th century
A common problem while trying to find an ancestor's past in Greece, and in the Balkans in general, due to their complex history, is to locate his/her birthplace. Name places have changed for political or historical reasons, even because they sounded bad!
The Institute of Historical Research (EIE) or Ινστιτούτο Ιστορικών Ερευνών in Greek, has collected all these changes and has created a webpage for those who want to find the old/new name. You can find this webpage, which unfortunately is only in Greek, here: https://settlement-renames.eie.gr/
The name places are sorted by prefecture, but you should be aware that some villages/towns fell under different prefectures/areas over the time.
Good luck!
P.S. I used this site to find the year of the renaming of the villages of Halkidiki, and also the names, and I inserted them in "Places" of FamilySearch. Many immigrants came to the US from Halkidiki, and I wanted the alternative names to be searchable.
Also, in advance, I would like you to pardon me for my "bad" English. Χαίρετε!
