Birth Record No. 36, Konin, Evangelical Parish, of Emilia Augusta Saenger, born in Konin on the 30th May 1838, christened on the 1st June 1838, daughter of Karol Saenger, a local master servant, 24 years old, and of his wife, Elzbieta, born Engel, 19 years old. Witnesses: Bogumil Engel, a local master clothier, 64 years old, and Daniel Zeuschner, also a local master clothier, 39 years old. The record was read and signed by Carl Saenger and Daniel Zeuschner. Bogumil Engel stated he cannot write.

Thank you for the interesting fact that Bogumil Engel (my 3rd GGF) couldn't write. Can you tell me what a master servant is?

Probably it meant that he was good at it, and performed this service for some time. Please keep in mind that Russian government did not want people who were subject to them to learn reading and writing. Some teachers doing it were imprisoned for doing it. Often people would not admit that they could read and write.
