Schnottwil SO - death - 1862 - Matthys - Soodgräber
Soodgräber appears on the death record from Schnottwil, Solothurn, Switzerland for Ulrich Matthÿs who died on 27 Jun 1862. Any help in translating this word is appreciated.

A Sodgräber (the double o has no meaning) builds a special kind of well. It is a round, vertical shaft lined with stones. The shaft extends from the surface to the groundwater. In order for the water to be pumped, it still needs a lifting device, in the simplest case a bucket on a rope. I have not found an English word for this type of well, so perhaps a look at the illustrations in the German Wikipedia will help.

Sod is a cistern / Sodbrunnen a draw well / ...gräber is derived from graben = dig.
So I would assume that a Sodgräber is a person digging cisterns/wells. As I have never seen that word in a church record: could you post a screenshot?

Thank you both for your insight. Here is a screenshot of the record in question. In other records Ulrich's occupation is listed as "Brunnengräber" which I interpreted as a well digger.

As Schangnau is mentioned I checked the death register there: here his mother, Barbara Mosimann, is mentioned - who may be still alive at the time of her son's death (the father is given as deceased).
