Revaluation/Griffiths valuation books
The griffiths valuation books were not just a one off. Every 10 years or so a new valuation book was created and If there were any changes to the book/reference this was recorded against the appropriate map entry in a different coloured ink for each single year. This makes following a family who stayed in Ireland easier. The bad news is the next bit applies only to the 6 countries of northern ireland. These revaluation books have been digitised and are online. And they are now fully searchable by place. So if you seach for a townland you get straight to every book that has recorded that townland. ie a search for lislagan gives about 20 results. So if your family moved you can now easily find the year they moved. If they stayed put you can find out who stayed on the land. Head of family only though, not every individual. Well worth having a look and a go in the search page. Use the links from the image below to get more information.
Search results for lislagan County Antrim below.
And the all important original image can contain valuable information regarding changes to tenancy of the property/reference. Also note that the original map reference stays the same so if it was Lislagan upper ref 2a in 1865 it will still be the same reference in 1900.
