Brown Family in Roane County Tennesee

I've been trying to research a part of my family. There was a Brown family that moved from Virginia (Unknown county/city) to Roane County TN sometime after 1812. I'm guessing the father died during a war or attack. It was a mother and 3 children (William John, Minerva-married William Franklin Jackson), and Hugh). I'm stuck at William John. He is my great-great-great-grandfather. Any ideas of where to go for further research?
