Looking for the families Groß, Grosz, Grohs, Grohssen and Leÿ, Lei, Lai, Ley, Lay, Loy, Leyh, Laih
Hello together,
thanks so much to be part of this community. Well, I'm looking for two different search strings. The first one is an obvious one, because my ancestor was born in Brabant, area Brussle. This is sure while he married in Germany, the marriage record notes this. I wasn't able to trace him back there in Brabant. Maybe because his name changed into a German version. Here is what I have: Wilhelm Groß, born 1772 and later a soldier in the army. Maybe due his duties he came to southern Germany and married there (later he emmigrated to Bessarabia). This is all what I have about him. His name was maybe Guilielmus, Guillaume, Wëllem oder Willem and the sure name perhaps Grosz, Grohs or Grohssen?! Maybe somebody is able to help me there. ...
The second search is an assumption, that maybe my Layh ancestors emmigrated from the Durch areas / Luxemburg or Belgium, Wallonia to Germany due to religious reasons. They could be found around 1620 and later in Palatinate in the cities of Biedesheim and Kindenheim. They were spelled Lei, Lai, Ley, Lay, Loy, Leyh, Laih und Layh, Leÿh, Leÿhen, Laÿ, Laÿe, Läÿhen, Läÿen, Laeyen, Läÿnn and Leÿ. It's a guess because of the Calvinism and maye they emmigrated into the more tolerant and people empty Palatinate because of the 30years of war. I have an example of a family coming from there (family Kippenberger) and lived later on in Kindenheim. That's what I have so far.
If you all have further questions for more material please let me know. Thanks so much and all the best!
Alex
